Evil is a form of power. Satan has been given authority to do evil. Although God has given him authority over the earth, Satan’s power is limited by God. The devil and his demons have no authority over anyone unless that person gives it to them through sin. Throughout Scripture, we learn about the importance of prayer. We also encounter situations in which people are overwhelmed by evil: a woman tormented by a spirit (Matthew 15:21-28), a man possessed by Legion (Luke 8:26), a spirit who causes blindness and muteness (Acts 10:9-16), and a man from the tombs who had been bound by chains for many years (Mark 5:1-20).
