My marriage was in disarray. I was shouldering the entire responsibility of raising three children, two of whom were teenagers (Lord, help me!), all on my own. Juggling work, cooking, cleaning, chauffeuring, fixing, financing, supporting, loving, and providing was an immense burden on my shoulders. My anxiety was skyrocketing, and I felt lost as to what to do about it. I attempted everything within my capacity: therapy, meditation, medication, music, exercise, reciting Scriptures—you name it! However, it seemed that nothing could make it disappear entirely. Don’t get me wrong; these efforts did help to some extent. I began to see life’s vibrancy once more, and I acquired the tools to regain my center. But I remained locked in a struggle. In hindsight, I recognized that I hadn’t tried “not trying.” Allow me to elucidate.

If you delve into Scripture, you’ll discover numerous verses addressing the issue of worry that you can dissect. I know this because I went through that process, searching for a magical formula to permanently conquer anxiety. In my search, I stumbled upon something unexpected. You must pay close attention to spot it, but in these verses, there are divine instructions to do nothing. What? Nothing? Yes, nothing.

In Matthew 11:28 (NIV), Jesus states, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” He is the one taking action here, not us. All we need to do is come to Him. In John 14:27 (NIV), He says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you…” Do you notice a recurring theme? He bestows peace upon us. He provides us with rest. We are required to do nothing. Once more, in Matthew 6:25-34 (NIV), this well-known passage instructs us not to worry, for God even cares for the grass of the field, which is here today and gone tomorrow. How much more will He take care of us? Here, we are advised to “seek first his kingdom… and all these things will be given” to us. That’s right—did you catch that? Given!

It wasn’t until I embraced doing nothing that I finally found inner peace.

God is a giver. Some things are beyond our capability, and that’s precisely how He intended it. All we must do is place our trust in Him and approach Him. He takes care of the rest! Surprisingly, all the concerns that had plagued me resolved themselves, one way or another. My self-imposed worry had been causing severe physical symptoms and depression. It wasn’t until I took a moment to breathe, truly approached Jesus, found solace, released all the details, expressed my complete trust in God, and learned to let go of control that I eventually discovered peace. My prayers shifted from a focus on my circumstances to an emphasis on my trust in Him.

If you find yourself in a similar position, I strongly recommend that you pause and rest. Seek out a serene space, away from the noise of the world, and recite this prayer for managing anxiety and depression. You may even consider keeping this prayer on your phone or near your mirror as a reminder to surrender everything to God and await His response with eager anticipation. I can assure you of this: He will grant you rest. He will bestow upon you a sense of peace. His answers are infinitely superior to anything you could devise on your own.
