Already in the past, this psalm has been (mis)used as an amulet and magical incantation against evil spirits and bad omens. Figure 1 shows a fifth-sixth century Jewish silver amulet consisting the texts of Psalm 91:1, Deuteronomy 6:4–7, and Proverbs 18:10. Can Psalm 91 be our immunity against COVID-19? We offer the following points to help us reconsider the meaning and significance of this psalm.
Because of a number of unusual words and ideas (such as pestilence/plagues, arrows, serpents/asps, God’s vengeance, refuge, God’s faithfulness; putting ten thousand to flight; long life; salvation; wings; deliver; hide/secret place; Most High; God commands; feet, etc.), Psalm 91 must be understood in the context of the Song of Moses in Deuteronomy 32. For example, Psalm 91:7 and Deuteronomy 32:30 both speak to “putting ten thousand to flight,” which is notable because these passages are among the rarest in the Old Testament. Both allusions rely on the themes of blessings for keeping the covenant in Leviticus 26:8 and acclamations for the conquests of the messianic ruler in 1 Samuel 18:7-8.
Once we understand the relationship between Psalm 91 and Deuteronomy 32, there are two surprises. First of all, God is truly the “enemy” in the Song of Moses! As a form of judgment, he is the one who unleashes arrows, venom, pestilence, and plagues (Deut 32:23–24).
