Bible Verses About Making Amends

Making amends is crucial in order to build and maintain healthy relationships with others. It can be a scary process, but the Bible provides us with many examples of making amends, along with guidance for how to go about it. To make things easy, I’ve compiled a list of some of my favorite Bible verses about making amends:

Leviticus 6:5

Leviticus 6:5 is one of many examples of God’s commandments that you should follow. It reads, “If anyone sins and commits a trespass against the Lord by deceiving his neighbor in regard to a deposit or a security entrusted to him, or through robbery, or if he has extorted from his neighbor.”

This scripture describes how God requires you to make amends if you’ve deceived someone, stolen money from someone else, or otherwise harmed them financially. If this verse applies to you and your life, then it means that making amends is the right thing for you do do.

Proverbs 28:13

Proverbs 28:13 says, “He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.”

This verse tells us that when we make amends with our neighbors, God will show mercy to us. It also tells us that if we don’t make amends with our neighbors, we won’t prosper. In other words, making amends is good for both you and your relationship with God.

That’s why it’s important for you to ask for forgiveness from those you have wronged as soon as possible—before pride gets in the way, anger takes over or fear paralyzes you from taking action!

Bible Verses When You Have Wronged Someone

The Bible is full of verses about making amends. Here are some of our favorites:

“If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won back your brother.” (Matthew 18:15 NIV)

“Whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them.” (Matthew 7:12 NIV)

“And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.” (1 John 4:16 NIV)

Luke 17:3-4

Jesus talked a lot about forgiveness, repentance and making amends. In Luke 17:3–4, he said: “If your brother sins against you, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and returns to you seven times, saying ‘I repent,’ forgive him” (New International Version).

This passage shows that making amends is important because it demonstrates a person’s willingness to repent of wrongdoing. It is also an opportunity for them to ask for forgiveness from those they have hurt or offended in some way.

Matthew 5:23-24

  • “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you what reward have ye? Do not even publicans (tax collectors) do so? And if ye salute your brethren only what do ye more than others? Do not even publicans do so? Be ye therefore perfect as also your heavenly Father is perfect” (Matthew 5:43-48).

Luke 17:3

“If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won back your brother. But if he will not listen, take one or two others along with you: ‘Every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector.”—Matthew 18:15-17

This command is clear: when someone does something hurtful toward us (or others), we should make amends by confronting them about their actions and asking for forgiveness. You can do this by yourself or with other people who have suffered harm as a result of this person’s actions. We should never fear the possibility that they’ll reject our request for forgiveness; doing so keeps us from healing ourselves and continuing relationships with those who truly care about us. Plus there’s no doubt that God supports making amends because He loves us so much!

Genesis 50:16-21

When Joseph, who was sold into slavery as a child, became an important man in Egypt, he had his brothers brought before him. The brothers were afraid because they had betrayed him and caused their father to suffer for many years. But Joseph forgave them and told them that God would give them favor with the king of Egypt if they ever needed help.

Then his brother Benjamin went to see their father, Jacob, in Egypt. They all wept together because Joseph was dead; then Jacob blessed Benjamin and sent him home again with gifts for his brothers.

James 5:16

James 5:16 is a valuable reminder that God’s mercy extends to those who are truly sorry and make a sincere effort to repent.

In this passage, James writes: “Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous person is powerful and effective.”

This verse teaches us that we must confess our sins to one another if we want God’s healing power in our lives. It also urges us to pray for one another—not only as an act of forgiveness, but also as an example of how important it is for us to ask others for forgiveness when we have wronged them.

2 Corinthians 7-12

If you’ve ever hurt someone and feel like apologizing, don’t hesitate to do so. It’s never too late to make amends with the people you’ve wronged. Here are the guidelines for making amends:

  • You can’t go back and change the past, but you can learn from it.
  • You can’t undo the damage you have done, but you can apologize and ask for forgiveness.
  • You can’t change the other person’s feelings, but you can change your own.

Romans 12:18

  • Be quick to listen, slow to speak.
  • Forgive others, just as God has forgiven you.
  • Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.

You should always try to make amends if you have wronged someone.

You should always try to make amends if you have wronged someone.

This is because making amends is a way of showing the person that what you did was a mistake and that you are genuinely sorry for your actions. It also shows them that you care about them and want to repair any damage done by your actions.
