Timeline of The New Testament Books

The New Testament is full of wisdom, grace and power, but there are some parts that are helpful for spiritual growth and others that are just hard to understand or are not helpful.

The New Testament books were written over a period of about 80 years, starting around AD 50 and ending in the early second century. These dates are approximate because there is a lot of guesswork involved in trying to determine when Jesus Christ was born and when he died.

The Gospels were written first, between AD 50 and 100. The authorship of each gospel is uncertain, but it’s generally agreed that Matthew and John wrote their gospels based on information from eyewitnesses, while Mark and Luke used the other gospels as sources for their own.

The Book of Acts was written by Luke around AD 62–63. It explains how Christianity spread after Jesus’ death, focusing on the missionary work of Paul.

Between 50 and 100 AD, apostles wrote the epistles, which are letters. They were written by all twelve apostles except Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus. Some are attributed to Paul (1 & 2 Corinthians; Galatians; Ephesians; Philippians; Colossians), while others are attributed to Peter (1 & 2 Peter); James (James); John (John); or Jude (Jude).
