What Do Frogs Symbolize?

Now, let’s take a look at what Bible says what frogs mean? This is what we would consider the symbolic meaning or spiritual meaning or even the prophetic meaning. It’s important we know what this is before we go into trying to interpret a frog dream.

The Word of God is our anchor and helps us to stay in truth and in spiritual health. If you Google frog dreams you will get a slew of search results of demonic and new age junk that will try to convince you what frogs symbolizes.

This stuff would have been right up ancient Egyptians and Greek-Romans alley. But as Christians our source must come from the Bible.

This symbolism also works for toads as well. As all toads are frogs but not all frogs are toads.

Frogs Symbolize False Gods

Frogs are mentioned in 4 accounts in the Bible. The first account in Exodus 8. This is the story of 10 plagues and one of them being a plague of frogs.

The Egyptians were inundated with them. They were found in houses and even in the palace. Pharaoh asked Moses to pray that they would stop. Once the frogs died the Egyptians had to pile them up in heaps and remove them because the smelled so bad. (Exodus 8:14)

The two remaining references in Psalms are a reminder of the plague.

Psalm 78:45 NIV – 45 He sent swarms of flies that devoured them, and frogs that devastated them.

Psalm 105:30 NIV – 30 Their land teemed with frogs, which went up into the bedrooms of their rulers.

God didn’t send frogs for no reason. It was actually to display His power, sovereignty, and truth to both the Egyptians and the Israelites.

The Egyptians of that day worshipped a goddess known as Heqet or Heket. She was basically a frog goddess, having the head and sometimes the body of a frog. How attractive.

She was worshipped for fertility (more of that below), water, and life. They believe that she was the one that brought the rain every year so that the Nile river would provide water and food. Frogs were considered sacred because of her.

So, we can see how frogs symbolism a false deity. This, for me really comes down to it being demonic in nature.

Frogs Symbolize Sexual Promiscuity

Frogs in ancient times were considered a sign of fertility. This is because of the sexual and reproductive behavior of the animal. I find it extremely interesting how many ancient civilizations thousands miles apart had a frog like deity that was known for fertility.

As a Christian this makes me think that this is an evil spirit that has taken that form.

  • The water goddess Heket often appeared as a woman with the head of a frog. Frogs were also the symbol of the midwife goddess Heqet, who ruled conception and birth, and Egyptian women often wore metal amulets in the form of frogs to enlist her good favor.
  • In pre-Colombian Mesoamerica, many tribes worshipped a goddess known as Ceneotl, the patron of childbirth and fertility, who took the form of a frog or a toad with many udders.
  • “The early Aztecs saw the toad as Tlaltecuhti, the earth mother goddess, who embodied the endless cycle of death and rebirth. She appears either as a real toad or in quasi-human form, with clawed feet and a gaping fanged mouth, and her joints are adorned with human skulls. She usually appears in a squatting position, giving birth to the new world, while dying souls pass through her fanged mouth to the netherworld.”
  • The ancient Chinese saw the toad as a predominantly female force, a negative “yin” in opposition to the positive male “yang.”
  • The Hindu to this day look at frogs as sacred creatures and even perform marriage ceremonies so that it will bring the rain.

Frogs Symbolize Unclean Spirits

The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up to prepare the way for the kings from the East. 13 Then I saw three impure spirits that looked like frogs; they came out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet. 14 They are demonic spirits that perform signs, and they go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather them for the battle on the great day of God Almighty. – Revelation 16:12-14

This passage in Revelation makes it pretty clear that these demonic/unclean spirits looked like frogs. They come out of their mouths making me think they use words to gain power and they perform signs.

The color green is the combination of the colors yellow and blue. From a Biblical perspective, yellow represents trials, while blue signifies the healing power of God’s Word.

Seeing green frogs in a dream might signify that you’re at the cusp of a potential transformation that will make your life better. All you need to do is listen to what God wants you to do and submit to His perfect will.

In the Bible, references to giants typically portray them as terrible beings. When you dream of a giant frog, it can be a significant warning that you should prepare for potential troubles ahead.

Other spiritual interpretations say that giant frogs represent mysteries. This could point to your intuition getting stronger or you gaining more mental clarity.

According to dream analysts, dreaming about a frog jumping out on you is a sign that you are experiencing a roller coaster of emotions and probably going through a series of ups and downs in your waking life.

If you’re getting tired of the endless turbulence of life, God might send a frog in your dreams to remind you to stop taking things too seriously, see things from a proper perspective, and learn to find joy in every moment of your journey.

If you notice the frog jumping around hastily, it means you’re letting your life pass you by. God is urging you to get back into rhythm, realign yourself with your highest self and start making the most out of your life.

On the other hand, if the frog in your dreams is jumping slowly, it signifies that you have nothing to worry about, and you need to give yourself permission to step outside the rat race and simply be.

What do frogs mean in the Bible?

Frogs in the Bible

When you think of frogs or even hear of frogs croaking, you might visualize green or yellow frogs that are slimy that eat bugs in a swamp. The act of killing a frog would be like killing an ant, something you do without thinking.

In some cultures, people eat frogs and consider them a delicacy. In other cultures, an animal totem, or in this case a frog totem can be a symbol of financial gains, prosperity, and good luck. Some even consider the frog spirit animal a one that is worshiped.

On the web, you see searches where people ask what does it mean to dream of a green frog or a white frog? Or dreaming of catching a frog and its meaning. With all these different views on frogs, you might not imagine the Bible talking about them, but the fact is frogs are mentioned in the Bible.

The Old Testament

Frogs are mentioned in the Old Testament as one of God’s plagues against ancient Egypt. The story starts when the Lord said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord: “Let My people go, that they may serve Me. But if you refuse to let them go, behold, I will smite all your territory with frogs…Then the Lord spoke to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Stretch out your hand with your rod over the streams, over the rivers, and over the ponds, and cause frogs to come up on the land of Egypt.’ ”So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt …”

“Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron, and said, “Entreat the Lord that He may take away the frogs from me and from my people; and I will let the people go, that they may sacrifice to the Lord … And Moses cried out to the Lord concerning the frogs … So the Lord did according to the word of Moses. And the frogs died out of the houses, out of the courtyards, and out of the fields. They gathered them together in heaps, and the land stank” (Exodus 8:6-1-14).

Frogs were sacred creatures to the Egyptians. One of their deities, Heqa, was a frog-headed goddess believed to have creative power. Frogs were a good sign that represented good luck. Though the main goal of this plague was to punish the persecutors of Israel, it was also given to cast scorn upon their pagan gods. The great multiplication of frogs made the goddess Heqa appear vicious to her own fervent worshipers. After this plague, the Egyptians had to pay more attention to the great God that had control over these creatures they once worshiped.

The New Testament

Frogs and frog symbolism are mentioned also in the New Testament in an important prophecy in Revelation:

“And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet” (Revelation 16:13).

Let’s look at the above symbols and their meanings:

Frogs

This word is intended to emphasis the repulsiveness of the three unclean spirits (dragon, beast, and false prophet) in the sight of God. Frogs capture their prey with their tongues. The mouth is the instrument of speech. Some might argue that this symbolize the counterfeit gift of tongues that is sweeping the world today.

Satan will use supernatural manifestations of various kinds (false gift of tongues and miracles) working through various human agencies (Charismatic movement), to unite the world behind his purpose to deceive many.

The Dragon

The dragon represents Satan working through Papal Rome. In these last days, it also includes non-Christian religions such as Buddhism, Shintoism, Hinduism, the New Age, secular humanism, etc. Many pagans worship spirits and practice various forms of spiritism resembling modern spiritism as practiced in Christian lands.

The Beast

The beast is described in Revelation 13. For more information see Who is the Beast of Revelation 13?

The false prophet

The false prophet describes a religious group that will take the lead in influencing worldwide worship of the beast. The false prophet is identified with the second beast of Revelation 13:11–17, which sponsors the first beast of Revelation 13:1-10. By the miracles he has power to do in the presence of the beast (Revelation 13: 12–14), he will deceive men into making an “image” to it.

The dragon of Revelation 12:3, 4 and the false prophet of Revelation 13:11-14; 19:20 form an alliance with the beast of Revelation 13:1-10. These three powers will become allies in Armageddon, the final war against God, His law, and His loyal followers (Revelation 14:12; 12:17). The three unclean spirits clearly represent this wicked trio of religious powers. These powers make up the latter-day “Babylon” (Revelation 16:13, 14, 18, 19 also 16:19; 17:5).

Bible Representation of Frogs

Coming forth from the mouth of the “dragon,” of the “beast,” and of the false prophet, these three unclean spirits represent the policy that this threefold religious union proclaim. It is described in Revelation 17:2 as the wine of Babylon (Revelation 16:14; 17:2, 6). This “wine” is Satan’s deceptive plan of uniting all the world under his rule, together with the falsehoods and “miracles” by which he moves his policy (Revelation 13:13, 14; 18:23; 19:20).

Keep in mind that miracles, including the gift of tongues, prove only one thing – supernatural power. The Bible tells us that supernatural powers can come also from the devil. For Satan can pose as an angel of light from heaven (2 Corinthians 11:13-15). He will utilize supernatural miracles so effectively that almost the entire world will be deceived and follow him.

The apostle John says that, “He (Satan) performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men. And he deceives those who dwell on the earth by those signs which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who was wounded by the sword and lived” (Revelation 13:13-14).

At the present, the devil is using the counterfeit gift of tongues to join churches and religions in a movement towards ecumenism. We see this occurrence among believers and unbelievers alike. Sadly, the denominations’ efforts for ecumenism today are not build on the truth of the Word but rather on feelings and popular opinions. Many churches are compromising their Bible based beliefs to be unified.

God is not in any movement that is based on compromise of truth. Unity could be fulfilled simply if the different denominations would only do what Jesus asks them to do. “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27). God’s Word must be the unifying element (John 17:17).

The gift of tongues

The original purpose for the gift of tongues was to communicate the gospel to people who spoke different languages. The gift of tongues is not to mutter or babble unintelligible sounds, but rather to have ability to reach others in their languages. Jesus had promised: “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth” (Acts 1:8).

The true gift of tongues is a miraculous ability to speak foreign languages unknown to the speaker who is preaching but known to the listeners (Acts 2:4-12). This gift was needed at Pentecost because 17 language groups were in the crowd and the Hebrew disciples needed to communicate the gospel to them.

Today, the false gift of tongues which is seen in babbling unintelligent sounds is what the Bible warned us against in Revelation 16:13. The Bible admonishes us to test the spirits (1 John 4:1). The counterfeit spirits can be easily identified if they do not agree with the Bible (Isaiah 8:19, 20) and if they come from one who deliberately disobeys God’s Word (Acts 5:32).
