History and Life of St Servatius
Today the Order of Preachers remembers the feast day of Saint Servatius according to the Extraordinary Calendar. He was declared protector of the order in the 14th century.
“In the fourteenth century the Church and the Order of Preachers were suffering bitter persecution from the schismatical Emperor, Lewis of Bavaria. Learning that the General Chapter was convoked to meet in his dominions , at the city of Cologne, 1330, A.D., this prince secretly plotted the death of the capitular Fathers.
They had just assembled, when Saint Servatius appeared in a dream to one of their number, a very holy religious, warned him of the danger which threatened himself and his brethren , and bade them to flee to Maestricht. This they accordingly did, thus escaping the snares which had been laid for them. And though their coming to Maestricht was wholly unexpected, God disposed the hearts of the inhabitants to receive them with the utmost kindness.”
Prayer is an essential tool for healing and is an excellent source of comfort, courage and strength for those who are suffering. During times of illness, disease or a life challenge, nothing is more important than to offer prayer and to join with others in assurance of these prayers.
In addition to prayer, the Saints protect us against harm, help strengthen our faith and offer spiritual guidance and healing. They are our models of prayer and their intercession helps present powerful prayers of healing to God on our behalf.
Our Patron Saints of Healing line offers hope and comfort to those who seek healing through the intercession of the Saints. Saint Servatius was born in Armenia during the fourth century and was said to be a distant relative to Our Savior and to Saint John the Baptist.
Servatius became a priest and guardian of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. While in Jerusalem, he had a vision in which he was ordered to go to Tongres to succeed Bishop Valentine. Servatius had been bishop of Tongres for several years when the Huns threatened to invade the city. In 382, as a refuge, Servatius took a pilgrimage to Rome where he had another vision. Saint Peter told him that Tongres would be destroyed and to move his see to Maastricht. Peter also handed Servatius the key to the Gates of Heaven, which gave him the power to forgive sins, and to open or lock the Gates.
No more than a few days after his relocation to Maastricht, Servatius fell ill with fever from an infection in his leg. He died on May 13, 384.
Saint Servatius is recognized today as the patron of those who suffer with foot or leg ailments. His feast day is May 13th.
Saint Servatius, Pray for Us.
short morning prayer
Lord, may nothing separate me from You today. Teach me how to choose only Your way today so each step will lead me closer to You. Help me walk by the Word and not my feelings. Help me to keep my heart pure and undivided. Protect me from my own careless thoughts, words, and actions. And keep me from being distracted by MY wants, desires, and thoughts on how things should be.
Help me to embrace what comes my way as an opportunity…rather than a personal inconvenience.
And finally, help me to live in the truth of Psalm 86:13, “Great is your love toward me.” Amen. ~ by Lysa Terkeurst
For Light to Follow You: Prayer from 440 AD
O Lord, direct our steps this day into the way of peace and strengthen our hearts to obey your commandments. May the Dayspring visit us from on high, and give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, that they may adore you for your mercy, follow you for your truth, desire you for your sweetness, for you are the blessed Lord God of Earth, now and forever. Amen.

Prayer for First Thing in the Morning
Good morning, Lord!
Thank You for a new day. Thank You that Your compassion is renewed every morning. Great is Your faithfulness and Your steadfast love, O Lord!
I don’t know what all is going to happen today, and how much I’ll get done, but You do. So I give this day to You.
Fill me with Your Holy Spirit, Father. Energize me for Your work, because You know how tired these bones are. Awaken me to the wonder of Your salvation, and quicken my spirit to the reality of Your work in my life.
Lord, my mind is filled with creative ideas, but they’re all jumbled. Holy Spirit, come and hover over my mind like You hovered over the waters at creation and speak order out of the chaos! Help me to cease striving and to trust that You will give me all I need today to do the work You’ve given me to do.
You will be faithful to complete the good work You’ve started, and as I step out into my day, I declare Your sovereignty over every area of my life. I entrust myself to You and ask that You use me however You see fit.
This day is Yours. My body is Yours. My mind is Yours. Everything I am is Yours. May You be pleased with me today. Amen. – Asheritah Ciuciu

Morning Prayer for Strength
Lord, I am weary and don’t know when this “race” will end in my life. I feel like I’ve been running forever, trying to outrun this trial. Help me to stop trying to outrun my pain but rather run with endurance the race you have set before me.
I know that because of you I am ultimately a victor over the trials in my life. I know that nothing in this world can separate me from your steadfast love. Please give me a measure of your love today; give me the strength to endure this trial.
Thank you for your love for me that never ends! And thank you for the crown of joy that awaits me forever in your Kingdom! – Adrian Rogers
powerful night prayer
There are hundreds of different bedtime prayers you can say at night. Here are just a few powerful prayers that cover a variety of topics to help you and your loved ones get a good night’s rest:
Prayer before bed
Lord God, many things have happened today. Some good, some bad, some hard, some joyful. Before I go to sleep, I want to entrust all these things to You. Honestly, there are many things I can’t figure out. Many circumstances are confusing. Many situations are just plain hard. Even though I can’t figure out how all these things will work out, I know that You are good, and I know that You will do good for me. Ultimately, I know that I can completely trust You. As I go to sleep, I declare that I trust in You. I may not know how all things will work out, but You do, and because You are good, I proclaim my trust in You. Amen.
Night prayer to God
Holy Spirit, sleep is a reminder that I am totally and completely dependent upon You. I don’t have infinite strength. I cannot keep working indefinitely. I need sleep to refresh me. As I drift off to sleep, it’s a clear reminder that I am not in control. I need You to sustain me through the night, and I need You to sustain me through my life. Please give me the grace of sleep. Give me the grace of strength. Allow me to wake refreshed in the morning. I depend on You, my good and gracious Father. I trust You to sustain me and to wake me with fresh energy for a new day in the morning. Amen.
Goodnight prayer for a friend
Dear God, as I close my eyes tonight, I’m praying for loved ones around me, for friends, and those who need to know You, Lord. I’m praying that Your love, like the billions of stars in the night sky outside, will touch them and help them see who You really are. I pray for our world and those in it. I pray for their needs as well as my own. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Goodnight prayer for family
Dear Lord, watch over my family as they sleep tonight. May You guide and protect them all through their journeys in life. Even the shortest journey will be of peace for You. I pray that the night is peaceful and calm for them. May they never experience any form of stormy gale throughout their lifetime. Enjoy your night’s rest, dear one. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Nighttime prayer for protection
Jesus, tender Shepherd, hear me. Bless this little lamb tonight. Through the darkness, be down near me, keep me safe until the morning light. Amen
Or for the holy angels’ protection:
Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, bless the bed that I lie on. Four corners to my bed. Four angels round my head. One to watch and one to pray, and two to bear my soul away. Amen.
Prayers for better sleep
Almighty God, I can’t sleep. I’m tossing and turning again. I’m so thankful You never grow weary, and You never sleep. I’m thankful that You are here with me right now, even when my mind won’t stop churning, and my head won’t stop spinning. I need You, Good Shepherd, because counting sheep doesn’t work. Would you comfort my heart, as only You can? Will You rescue me from my own spiral of thoughts? For I know that when I trust in You, peace like a river overflows my soul, and I can praise You in advance for sweet rest. Amen.
