Prayer To Help Stop Gossiping

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” Ephesians 4:29 Can you pray for Jan? Yet a conversation like this is nothing more than gossip, thinly veiled as a prayer request used as a way to share information about another member of church.

Proverbs 16:28 – “A perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends.

If I’m honest, it’s easier speaking about someone else’s life rather than my own. I even get a little joy out of hearing someone else’s problems. For a moment, it seems like my life is better than someone else’s. I can temporarily indulge in the spiritual high of knocking someone else off her pedestal in a pathetic attempt to keep me on my pedestal.

Perhaps, you, like me, have experienced the high of hearing about someone else’s problems. Have you thrived even a little bit on the idea that someone who on the outside is thinner, prettier, or better than you is crumbling on the inside?

God meant for words to have power. God used words when He spoke the world into being. Jesus used them to calm storms, heal the sick and rebuke the Pharisees. In the same way, our words can have a positive or negative effect on people, depending on which we choose to use.

Are your speaking words that heal, or words that hurt?

Let’s pray together now for the power we need to kill the sin of gossip:

Lord, thank you for your mercy and grace, even when we sin and gossip. Help me see this sin for what it is—hateful, hurtful, and ultimately sin that separates me from you. Lord, give me a greater affection for you. Help me love you so much that it spills over into everyone I meet. Help me love you so much that the temptation to gossip melts away in the midst of my thankfulness and joy. Help me long to build others up, not tear them down. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

psalms to stop gossip and slander

Have you ever noticed how often our opinions of people change? One day we think they are great, and the next day we can’t stand them. Then we allow our fleeting emotions to burst free from our thoughts, and we gossip about them. But what if our desire to think about the people around us is not necessarily wrong? What would happen if we started overcoming the spirit of gossip by praying when we felt the urge to focus on others?

Why Should We Replace Gossip with Prayer?
When we have the urge to gossip, our hearts and minds are telling us there is new information to analyze and assimilate into our understanding. In a brief moment, we have a choice of two paths – blessings or curses. We can show mercy and offer blessings to others or we can show judgment and offer a curse. The choice is ours. We can gossip or we can pray. Tear down or build up.

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing” 1 Thessalonians 5.11 NIV

The Bible has a lot to say about our words. When we fully understand the power of the tongue, we would be very careful about what we think and say. The tongue is literally a weapon that can be used for good or evil. There is no in-between. When we gossip, our tongue is used for evil. When we pray, our tongue is used for good. Once we learn to wield this weapon for good, we can reap the benefits.

Promises for Overcoming the Spirit of Gossip

Not only can we bless others with our words, but we can also bless ourselves. The Bible gives us 7 promises that are unleashed as we replace gossip with prayer. When we choose to bless others, we literally bless ourselves. When we choose to curse others, we, in turn, curse ourselves. We can transform our desire to gossip into a force for good by praying. As we get better at replacing gossip with prayer, our life will experience massive positive results.

Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses…” Deuteronomy 30.19 NLT

Promise 1: We will enjoy life more.
We don’t realize it, but when we spew negative words about others, we too become covered with negativity. However, if we learn to transform our words of judgment to words of mercy, our days will become good and joyful. We will not be bogged down by the words of destruction we have spoken aloud.

If you want joy in your life and have happy days, keep your tongue from saying bad things and your lips from talking bad about others” 1 Peter 3.10 NLV

Promise 2: We will always have an answer.
We may not know everything, but God certainly does. When He can trust us with our words, He will open up His wisdom and release it on our lives. The void left behind after we overcome the spirit of gossip will be replaced by God’s righteous words of wisdom.

Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone” Colossians 4.6 NLT

Promise 3: We will have close friends.
Friendships are a choice and they take work, but they can greatly enrich and bless our lives and keep us on the right track. People are not perfect, and our friends will make mistakes. If we choose to forgive instead of gossiping about the transgression, our relationships will prosper. And when we make a mistake, the mercy can then be extended to us.

Love prospers when a fault is forgiven, but dwelling on it separates close friends” Proverbs 17.9 NLT

Promise 4: We will have healing.
Our words will not only bring healing to others, but they can also bring healing to us. The power of Jesus Christ is found in mercy. When we speak words of mercy in prayer instead of gossiping, we are surrounding ourselves and others in an atmosphere of healing. Our bodies, minds, and hearts will all benefit from the healing power around us.

Some people make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise bring healing” Proverbs 12.18 NLT

Promise 5: We will have satisfaction.
Gossiping is like a fire that can’t be quenched (Proverbs 26.20). We will stress ourselves out overthinking about people and situations, and our hearts will be robbed of satisfaction. When we gossip, we become the person speaking out of turn in the courtroom who will eventually be removed. When we pray to God instead of gossiping, we are pleading in the ears of the Judge Whose verdict is final.

Wise words satisfy like a good meal; the right words bring satisfaction” Proverbs 18.20 NLT

Promise 6: We will have peace.
No money in the world can buy true peace. Peace comes to us each day because we replace our thoughts and words of gossip with prayer. Our words can free us or enslave us. When we pray instead of gossip, we surround ourselves, our homes and our relationships with God’s unending peace. How simple it is to have peace. All we need to do is learn to pray instead of gossip.

He who watches over his mouth and his tongue keeps his soul from troubles” Proverbs 21.23 NLV

Promise 7: We will have life.
The Bible says that the power of life and death is in our words. This realization should make us only want to speak life. When we replace gossip with prayer, we are literally pouring life onto us and those around us. We can reap the fruits of blessings or curses. The choice is ours, and all we have to do is use our tongue in prayer.

The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences” Proverbs 18.21 NLT

Prayer For Forgiveness For Gossiping

Heavenly Father, we gather together and come into agreement in the wonderful and powerful Name of Jesus Christ.

Where two or more are gathered there You’ll be in the midst of us and anything we agree upon as touching You will surely do.

Father in Jesus Name, there is no distance in the spirit and we thank You for the listener who desires a prayer to refrain from gossip and to stay away from those who practice it.

Father, if we aren’t cautious and actively keep a guard up against gossip, it’s easy for us all to fall into speaking behind someone’s back.

The listener comes before You today and asks for forgiveness, whether knowingly or unknowingly, for occasionally doing this.

They repent for any activity in gossip and they turn from it right now.

Lord, they raise their hand and admit it’s wrong. They no longer want the enemy to use them in this manner.

Together in prayer we ask You to help them to put a stop to gossip in their life.

Help them set a guard over their mouth and tongue in Jesus Name.

It’s time to stop gossiping about other people.

It would be naive to think that the opportunity to gossip will not arise again so when it does, please help them to graciously leave the conversation.

In Jesus Name please help them at all costs to avoid joining in on this sin.

The devil roams about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour and the listener will not allow themselves to fall into this trap any longer with Your help.

We decree and declare that through the power of the Holy Spirit within them they will not gossip.

They will not repeat gossip. They will not whisper gossip. They will not speak gossip. In no way will they pass it along.

If they would not say something in front of a person, open for all to hear, then they will not speak those words when they are not present.

We decree and declare that they no longer participate in the sin of gossip and they stay away from those who practice it.

Gossip is wrong.

Gossip is sin.

Gossip is not pleasant to You Lord.

Praise You Father that the listener speaks only those things that are pleasant in Your sight.

We believe and receive everything we’ve prayed and give You glory in advance for this prayer is answered!

In the wonderful and precious Name of Jesus we pray, amen.

Lord, thank you for your mercy and grace, even when we sin and gossip. Help me see this sin for what it ishateful, hurtful, and ultimately sin that separates me from you.

Father,

Praise You for godly friends who hold us accountable. Thank You for illuminating the deceitful power of gossip, that we all entertain within earshot daily.

Forgive us for listening to it instead of walking away. We confess that often we don’t speak up out of fear of rejection, and pray that you help us to have the courage to honor others with kind words when their character is being publicly slain.

Bless and heal those who have been mangled by gossip, and others enslaved by it’s addictive habit. Heal our insecurities, and help us learn to turn to you for affirmation. Make us busy serving others in love to give You glory, instead of sitting in circles of babble and participating in chatter-filled phone calls. Empower us with Your Holy Spirit to head Your warnings, and steer our conversations with Your love.

In Jesus’ Name,

Amen.

Father your word says we must give an account of every idle word that we have spoken from our mouth. I ask therefore that you would forgive me for speaking lies, for gossiping, backbiting, murmuring and for complaining. Forgive me for every idle word that I have spoken against my pastor, my church, family, relatives, friends, co-workers, associates, others around me now and those in times past.

I also ask for your forgiveness for every word that I’ve spoken of doubt, fear and unbelief regarding your word and your ability to manifest what you have promised in my life. Your word says that if I would confess my sins, that you are faithful and just to forgive me and the blood of Christ shall cleanse me from all unrighteousness. I confess and repent of them now. Cleanse me with the blood of Jesus. Cleanse my heart and keep me from allowing them to take root in me.

I ask from this day forth that you would help me that the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart would be acceptable in your sight. Let the words I speak have your approval. I also pray that you let the thoughts that I receive and conceive in my heart be approved by our Spirit. I thank you for your mercy and grace, amen.

Lord, I admit that I’m guilty of occasionally talking behind people’s backs, and I’m wrong for doing it. I ask You to please forgive me for allowing the devil to use me and my mouth in this way. I am asking You to help me keep a tight rein on my tongue and to refrain from gossiping about other people. When I find myself in a situation where the conversation turns to gossip, help me know how to graciously dismiss myself from the conversation so I can avoid participating in this sin and falling back into this trap. I repent for my activity in gossip, and I turn from it in Jesus’ name!
I confess that I will no longer participate in the sin of gossip. If it can’t be said publicly, I refuse to say it. If I have to whisper it, I will not repeat it. I refrain from gossip, and I stay away from those who practice it. Gossip is a sin, and I refuse to be a part of it. My mouth speaks only what is good for the use of edifying those who hear me!
I disown all covenants, any point of contacts and dominant gossips or familiar spirits related to gossip or even attracting gossip with the blood of Jesus. Right now I put on the armour of God to disrupt all forces of gossips, I rebuke all of them, smash any type of gossips with fire of the living God, burning all the bleeding grounds of gossip I the name of Jesus Christ, say Amen and Amen!
I declare this by faith in Jesus’ name!
Amen!

Lord God, grant that I may never fall into the sin of slander and gossip. Help me to think charitably about my neighbor and to never spread lies or rumors about them. May I always remember that my neighbor is made in Your image and is deeply loved by You, the same as me. May I treat them as I would treat You. If there is a situation in which my friends or coworkers are gossiping, give me the courage to change the subject, bring up the person’s good points, or walk away entirely. Help me to hold my tongue when the occasion warrants, knowing that my every word is recorded and I will be judged according to Your justice. For the times I have failed in this charity, forgive me Lord, and grant that I may not fall into that sin again by Your grace. Amen.

Father please forgive me for gossiping a lot
