English Standard Version (ESV)
The English Standard Version (ESV) is a revision of the 1971 edition of the Revised Standard Version. It is published by Crossway Books and can be found in many churches and libraries.
The ESV was translated from the original languages rather than using a previous translation as its source text, like in some other modern translations. However, unlike formal-equivalence translations such as the New American Standard Bible or King James Version, it does not translate word-for-word but rather uses phrases that are commonly used in English today. This makes it easy for people new to studying Bible to understand what they are reading.
This version is also one of several which adhere closely to an earlier manuscript tradition known as “Masoretic Text.” This is an ancient Hebrew text from which most modern versions of Hebrew Scriptures were derived; however, it differs from more recent manuscripts found at Qumran (Dead Sea Scrolls). In some places where other versions would say something different than Masoretic Text does (such as 1 John 5:7), ESV remains true to its roots with this older manuscript tradition even though newer manuscripts have been discovered since then which have changed our understanding somewhat regarding certain passages such as those referring specifically about Jesus or John’s words about being “born again” (John 3:3).
