St. Ramon Nonato was born in Spain in the year 1525. He was orphaned at a young age and became a shepherd. When he was 18 years old, he decided to join the Franciscan Order and became a friar at the monastery of Guadalupe near Madrid, Spain.
Ramon was ordained as a priest in 1563 by Pope Pius IV, who also named him bishop of Cartagena de Indias in Colombia, South America. After serving as bishop for 27 years, Ramon returned to Spain due to illness and retired from his position as bishop. He died on January 14, 1601 at the age of 76 years old.
The feast day of San Ramon Nonato is celebrated in the Philippines on December 16. This is the day that the people of San Ramon, Tarlac, honor their patron saint.
The first Mass was held at the San Ramon Church on this date in 1590. The church was built by Father Pedro Sanchez, who had just arrived from Mexico City with two other priests and two laymen. They were assigned to the province of Pampanga, where they built their first mission house at Barrio San Diego (now called Hulong Duhat).
On December 16, 1590, Father Sanchez celebrated Mass in Barrio San Diego for the first time. He baptized a child named Juan de Jesus de la Cruz, who was born to Agustin de la Cruz and Beatriz de Villanueva. The baby’s godparents were Juan de Jesus and his wife, Maria Perez.
The next day, December 17, 1590, Father Sanchez baptized another infant named Juan de Dios de la Cruz in honor of St. John the Evangelist and his grandparents’ names who were also baptized on this same day: Juan de Dios and Maria Perez.
