Baptists form a major branch of Protestantism distinguished by baptizing professing Christian believers only (believer’s baptism), and doing so by complete immersion. Baptist churches also generally subscribe to the doctrines of soul competency (the responsibility and accountability of every person before God), sola fide (salvation by just faith alone), sola scriptura (scripture alone as the rule of faith and practice) and congregationalist church government. Baptists generally recognize two ordinances: baptism and communion.

Diverse from their beginning, those identifying as Baptists today differ widely from one another in what they believe, how they worship, their attitudes toward other Christians, and their understanding of what is important in Christian discipleship.[1] For example, Baptist theology may include Arminian or Calvinist beliefs with various sub-groups holding different or competing positions, while others allow for diversity in this matter within their denominations or congregations.

Historians trace the earliest “Baptist” church to 1609 in Amsterdam, Dutch Republic with English Separatist John Smyth as its pastor.[2] In accordance with his reading of the New Testament, he rejected baptism of infants and instituted baptism only of believing adults.[3] Baptist practice spread to England, where the General Baptists considered Christ’s atonement to extend to all people, while the Particular Baptists believed that it extended only to the elect.[4] Thomas Helwys formulated a distinctively Baptist request that the church and the state be kept separate in matters of law, so that individuals might have freedom of religion. Helwys died in prison as a consequence of the religious conflict with English Dissenters under James I. In 1638, Roger Williams established the first Baptist congregation in the North American colonies. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the First and Second Great Awakening increased church membership in the United States.[5] Swedish Baptist (Scandinavian Baptists) have origins in the Radical Pietism movement that split off from the Lutheran Church of Sweden due to the Conventicle Act (Sweden) rather than the English Dissenters that split off from the Anglican Church of England, but both reached similar conclusions on theology. Baptist missionaries have spread their faith to every continent.

What Is The Role Of The New Testament In Christianity

The New Testament is a historical record of Jesus Christ’s life, teachings, and mission to advance the early Christian Church through their own ministries. The Hebrew word for “testament” can also mean “covenant,” making the New Testament a “covenant.” According to the gospel, a covenant is a solemn promise or pact between believers and God. When we make a covenant with the Lord, He promises to reward us if we keep our end of the bargain. The Lord determines the requirements we must meet in order to receive his blessings (obedience to his laws and ordinances). The Lord promises us salvation and exaltation in the next life if we keep our covenants and endure to the end in faith during our mortal existence. The Lord and His Apostles taught His children during His mortal ministry how to return to His presence by means of the covenants and doctrines recorded in the New Testament.
