What is the Latin Rosary?

Tradition holds that Mary appeared to St. Dominic in 1221 and revealed the Rosary to him in the Church’s universal language: Latin. After Mary’s apparition, St. Dominic shared this devotion with others to meditate on the mysteries of Christ’s life. Many also believe that the historical origin of the Rosary lies in the monastic practice of reciting 150 Psalms each week. Today, many believers pray the Rosary in their native tongues, but you can also pray it in its original language.

Prayer 1

Sancta María, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatóribus, nunc, et in hora mortis nostræ. Amen.

Hail Mary, full of Grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

In this part of the Hail Mary, we acknowledge the special favor and grace bestowed upon Mary by God. She is truly blessed among women for being chosen to bear the Son of God. As we recite these words, we honor Mary’s unique role in salvation history and express our gratitude for her willingness to say “yes” to God’s plan. Just as Mary said in Luke 1:38, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.”

Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and in the hour of our death.

As we ask for Mary’s intercession, we acknowledge her as the mother of God. This title emphasizes her close relationship to Jesus and highlights her special role in the divine plan of salvation. Through her prayers, Mary can help us to grow closer to her Son and obtain the grace we need for our salvation. In John 19:26-27, Jesus said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that hour the disciple took her into his own home.

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.

This prayer acknowledges Mary’s role as the Queen of Heaven and the source of mercy for all believers. As the mother of Jesus, she is a source of comfort and hope for us in our times of need. Just as a mother cares for her children, Mary intercedes for us and brings our prayers to her Son. In Revelation 12:1, we read about the woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray. Grant, we beseech thee, O Lord God, that we, your servants, may enjoy perpetual health of mind and body, and by the glorious intercession of Blessed Mary, ever Virgin, be delivered from present sorrow and enjoy eternal happiness. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
