Joel Osteen is a preacher and televangelist. He is the senior pastor of Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas, a non-denominational Christian megachurch. He took over his father’s ministry in 1999 and has since become one of the most influential evangelical leaders in the United States.[1] As of 2015, his sermons are broadcast to over 7 million viewers weekly on Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN).[2]
Osteen was born in Houston, Texas. He is the oldest son of John and Dolores “Dodie” Olsteen (née Fitzgerald), both now deceased.[3][4] His father was a former Southern Baptist minister who became Charismatic in the late 1950s; he founded Lakewood Church on Mother’s Day 1959[5] with his wife, who had been active in ministry since 1948.[6][7] Joel’s mother died in 2001 after 45 years of marriage.[8] He has two younger brothers, Paul and Michael.[9][10]
Joel married Victoria Lai on April 4, 1987.[11] The couple have two children: Jonathan (born November 25, 1990) and Alexandra “Ali” (born August 30, 1993).[12][13]
