Jesus was in a boat with his disciples, and a great storm came up on the sea. The waves beat into the boat, and it was nearly swamped. Jesus kept them awake all night, and just before dawn he got them out to land. They were all amazed and said, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!” (Mark 4:37-41).

This is a story about Jesus and his disciples. Imagine that you are a disciple of Jesus. You have been travelling with him for days, hearing him speak and seeing the amazing things he does. You have also noticed that Jesus tends to do a lot of praying alone by himself.

Jesus was tired from teaching and healing people all day long so he sent the disciples on ahead in a boat, while he went up into the mountains to pray by himself. It got dark just as they were out in the middle of Lake Galilee, far from shore, rowing against large waves and strong winds (remember there were no motor boats back then).

Meanwhile, Jesus was still praying up in the mountains alone when looked down at Lake Galilee where his friends were stuck out in the middle of it without any help or support nearby.

Peter said “If it is you, tell me to come to you on the water.” And Jesus said “Come.” And Peter got out of their boat onto Lake Galilee’s surface and started walking towards Jesus! But when he saw how strong wind was blowing over its surface he panicked because it made walking very hard- even falling over dangerous- plus huge waves kept splashing into his face making it difficult for him to see anything else around him clearly enough to keep going forward instead of falling backwards or sideways into drowning risk territory again! So Peter cried out “Lord save me!” And grabbed hold of Jesus’ hand which stopped Peter from sinking further beneath its stormy surface so together they could both walk through those big white splashing waves together until eventually reaching that quiet safe spot on land again where everyone else had already been waiting for them patiently all this time worried sick about

In Matthew 14, Jesus had a long day of teaching and healing the sick. So he sent his disciples on ahead by boat while he went to a remote place to pray. Night fell while Jesus was alone, and the boat was far from shore, beaten by the waves because the wind was against it.

You know that feeling when you’re exhausted and overwhelmed? Like, your brain is trying to figure out how to make sense of everything going on in the world, but it’s all too much for it. That’s what Jesus was probably experiencing here. He’d just spent a long day teaching and healing sick people—and since he was also God, he didn’t exactly need any rest himself!

The disciples were tasked with taking care of things while Jesus went off to pray alone in a remote place. They were supposed to wait there until they heard from him again. But instead they decided they could handle things themselves: “You go ahead without us,” they told Jesus when he found them asleep by the shoreline (Mark 6:45). “We’ll stay here.”

Early in the morning, Jesus came to them, walking on the sea. When they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and cried out; for they all saw him and were terrified. Jesus told them not be afraid- it was him. Peter said “If it is you, tell me to come to you on the water.” And Jesus said “Come.” And Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water towards Jesus. But when he saw the strong wind he panicked and started to sink. He cried out “Lord save me!” And Jesus reached out his hand, grabbed Peter’s hand, saved him from drowning.

There is so much to learn and experience from this story. Jesus was in the boat with his disciples, and then he wasn’t. He was there when the storm came, but he wasn’t after it passed. How does one recognize God’s presence amidst all of our doubts?

The disciples were amazed that their small vessel had been spared from sinking by such a violent storm. They couldn’t help but wonder how it happened that they—a group of uneducated fisherman—had been spared while so many other boats sank along with their occupants. It must have seemed like a miracle to them!

In this story, Jesus gets into a boat (or as some translations say “embarked” or “entered”). The word used here is simply ‘ginomai’, which means “to become” or “to come into existence”. This same Greek word appears in other places where it means things like “live” or “dwells”. So when we read about Jesus entering into something—whether it be people who are sick or sinners who need forgiveness—we get an idea of what this means: Someone who enters into another person’s situation brings life and hope where there was sickness or sin before!

From these passages we can learn that Jesus is not afraid to help his disciples in the midst of danger. He is willing to do anything for them and will go great lengths just so they can be safe. Jesus loves us no matter what. Even if we feel like we are sinking, he will still reach out to save us. All you need to do is ask him for help!
