How to Enter Covenant with God

When we are baptized into the Church, we enter into the covenant the Lord made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. One of the key benefits of this covenant is the right to receive help and guidance from the Holy Ghost.

It is important to remember that genuine conversion requires the effective operation of all five of these experiences in a covenant relationship with God. By following these principles and remaining faithful, we can receive the blessings promised to those who honor their covenants with the Lord. Read on to learn all the steps needed on how to enter covenant with God

How to Enter Covenant with God

1. Faith

Faith is the foundation of our relationship with God. Without faith, it is impossible to please Him (Hebrews 11:6). Believing in Jehovah God and Jesus Christ is essential for entering into a covenant relationship with them.

2. Repentance of Sins

Repentance is turning away from sin and turning towards God. It is acknowledging our wrongdoings, feeling genuine sorrow for them, and making a commitment to change our ways. God promises to forgive us when we repent and turn to Him (1 John 1:9).

3. Confession of Sins

Confessing our sins is an important part of repentance. By confessing our sins to God, we take ownership of our mistakes and seek His forgiveness. The Bible tells us to confess our sins to one another and pray for each other so that we may be healed (James 5:16).

4. Baptism

Baptism is a symbolic act of being cleansed from sin and entering into a new life with Christ. It is a public declaration of our faith in Jesus Christ and our commitment to follow Him. Through baptism, we become members of the Church and receive the gift of the Holy Ghost (Acts 2:38).

5. Obedience

Obedience is the key to maintaining a covenant relationship with God. It involves following His commandments, heeding His guidance, and aligning our will with His. Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15).

Example of Personal Covenant with God in The Bible

Throughout the Bible, there are numerous examples of individuals making personal covenants with God. A personal covenant is a solemn agreement between an individual and God, where the individual commits to following God’s will and living according to His commandments. These covenants are a powerful expression of faith and devotion to God, and they often serve as a foundation for a person’s relationship with Him.

1. The Covenant of Abraham

One of the most well-known examples of a personal covenant with God is the covenant that God made with Abraham. In Genesis 17:7, God promises Abraham, “I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.” This covenant was a personal promise from God to Abraham, affirming their relationship and the blessings that would come from following God’s will.

2. The Covenant of David

In 2 Samuel 7:16, God makes a covenant with King David, promising that his kingdom will endure forever. This covenant was a personal agreement between God and David, demonstrating God’s faithfulness and David’s commitment to following Him. Despite David’s shortcomings, God remained faithful to His covenant with David, showing the power of personal covenants in strengthening one’s relationship with God.

3. The Covenant of Moses

Another example of a personal covenant with God is the covenant that God made with Moses on Mount Sinai. In Exodus 34:27-28, God commands Moses to write down the terms of the covenant, which included the Ten Commandments and other laws for the Israelites to follow. This covenant was a personal agreement between God and the Israelites, demonstrating the importance of obeying God’s commandments and following His will.

4. The Covenant of Jeremiah

In Jeremiah 31:33, God promises a new covenant to His people, saying, “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.” This covenant was a personal commitment from God to His people, showing His love and faithfulness to those who follow Him. It emphasizes the importance of having a personal relationship with God and living according to His will.

These examples from the Bible illustrate the power and significance of personal covenants with God. They show how individuals can strengthen their relationship with God by making a commitment to follow His will and live according to His commandments.

How to Make a Covenant with God by Sacrifice

In order for a covenant to be established and enforced, a sacrifice must be made. God has already done His part. Man must do his if he wants to reap and continue to reap the blessings of a covenant with our heavenly Father. We have a covenant of grace with God, our Father, through the shed blood of Jesus Christ. No other blood needs ever to be shed again; neither will any other blood, shed as an offering, be accepted by the Father (Hebrews 10:8-10). The sacrifice God expects of His children, who are already washed in the blood of the lamb, is the sacrifice of obedience, thanksgiving and praise.

The sacrifice God expects of His children, who are already washed in the blood of the lamb, is the sacrifice of obedience, thanksgiving, and praise.

Obedience

Obedience is a key aspect of our covenant with God. It shows our love and respect for Him and His commandments. As it says in 1 Samuel 15:22, “To obey is better than sacrifice.” We are called to walk in obedience to God’s word, following His ways and trusting in His guidance.

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a form of sacrifice that pleases God. When we offer thanksgiving for all that He has done for us, we acknowledge His goodness and faithfulness. Psalm 100:4 reminds us to “Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.”

Praise

Praise is another sacrifice that is required of us in our covenant with God. When we lift up His name in praise, we exalt Him above all else and declare His greatness. Hebrews 13:15 says, “Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name.”

  • Obeying God’s commandments shows our love and respect for Him (1 Samuel 15:22).

  • Thanksgiving acknowledges God’s goodness and faithfulness (Psalm 100:4).

  • Praise exalts God above all else and declares His greatness (Hebrews 13:15).

Benefits of Covenant with God

Entering into a covenant with God is like a marriage where both parties share life together. When God made a covenant with Abraham, he promised to bless him and make his name great. Abraham’s obedience to God’s command showed his commitment to the covenant, and God committed to blessing him in return. This relationship is one where both parties are responsible for each other and work towards mutual blessings.

The Covenant Relationship with God

Genesis 15:18

“In the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates.”

Abraham’s covenant with God was a promise of land for his descendants. God made a commitment to bless Abraham and his descendants, and in return, Abraham was faithful and obedient to God’s commands.

Jeremiah 31:33

“But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.”

This verse emphasizes the intimate relationship between God and His people. When we enter into a covenant with God, His laws become part of our being, guiding us and shaping our actions to align with His will.

Galatians 3:29

“And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.”

Through Jesus Christ, we are able to inherit the promises made to Abraham. By accepting Christ and entering into a covenant relationship with God, we become heirs to the blessings and promises of God.

God’s blessings Responsibility to follow God’s commands

Hebrews 8:10

“For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people.”

Just as God made a covenant with the Israelites, He offers the same covenant to all who choose to follow Him. His laws become ingrained in our hearts, and He promises to be our God as we become His people.
