The New Testament is the collection of Christian scriptures that were written after the life of Jesus. These writings were preserved and compiled into a single collection we now call the New Testament.
The Old Testament was written before Jesus’ life on earth, and contains many stories about God’s interactions with humanity. The New Testament is made up of 27 books, each telling a different story about Jesus Christ’s life on earth. To read more about these books, see our article “What are the Books in the Bible?”
The New Testament is divided into two sections:
The Gospels – These books tell about Jesus’ life and teachings, as well as his death and resurrection. They include Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
Epistles – These are letters from apostles to recipients such as Timothy or Titus; they contain instructions for living as Christians (or “followers of Christ”). They include Romans through Jude

How Is the New Testament Divided
Now that we’ve talked about the Old Testament, let’s move on to the New. As its name implies, this is a testament to Jesus Christ and what he did for us on Earth. It has five divisions:
Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John
History: Acts
Paul Letters: Romans through Philemon
General Letters: Hebrews through Jude
Prophecy: Revelation
Gospels
The Gospels are the books that tell the story of Jesus. There are four of them: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. These books are called the “good news” because they explain how God saves us through Christ’s death and resurrection.
The Gospels are the most important books in the New Testament because they reveal God’s plan for us to be saved from sin by following Jesus Christ.
History
The history of the New Testament is really just the history of the church. From its beginnings to its culmination in the early days of Christianity, we can see that God has been faithful to His promise that He would not leave His people without a guide through this difficult world.
The first part of the New Testament contains historical writings such as Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. These books provide an accurate record of Jesus’ life on Earth and give us insight into what it means for Him to be our Savior.
Paul Letters
The four letters written by Paul (sometimes called the pastorals) are not included. Paul’s letters were written while he was in prison, so they may have been sent to various churches or individuals.
General Letters
- Galatians
- Ephesians
- Philippians
- Colossians
- 2 Thessalonians
Prophecy
The first section of the New Testament is the Gospels, which tells about Jesus Christ and His life on earth. The second part contains letters written by early Christians to one another, dealing with issues such as church organization and worship. The third division is called the book of Acts, which describes the spread of Christianity after Jesus’ death and resurrection.
The last distinct division contains prophetic books, which foretell future events relating to God’s plan for man’s salvation (the story found throughout Scripture). These books include Daniel, Ezekiel and Zechariah—books that give us insight into end times prophecy; Matthew 24-25; Joel 2:28-32; 2 Peter 3:10–13; and Revelation 6–22
