What you may not know is that the Bible was not written in chronological order of events. Instead the Bible was organized by genre, these include: Pentateuch, Historical, Wisdom and Poetry, Major Prophets, Minor Prophets, Gospels, Church History, Pauline Epistles, General Epistles and Apocalyptical.

Old Testament Books of the Bible in Order

The following is the basis framework in which the old testament books of the bible are ordered:
Pentateuch – These are the books of the law and includes: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy.
Historical – These cover the accounts of the Israelites from their settlement in the promised land to the destruction of Jerusalem. These books include: Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, 2 Kings, 1 Chronicles, 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther.

Gospels – These follow the story line of the life of Jesus Christ during his time on earth. These books include: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John.
