Prayer For Regret And Guilt

A Prayer of Self-Forgiveness
Holy God,
Today, I come to you in the utmost humility, asking for your assistance in forgiving myself. I’ve spent far too much time dwelling on the past. And it’s wearing me down to constantly think there was more I could have done. When I think this way, a part of me actually believes it to be true. I wish I could change my past decisions, but it’s too late. My future is the only thing I can influence at this point. There is no going backwards for me in this lifetime. All my worries are now at your feet, Lord. It’s not your fault that I feel so guilty about my actions. You see, Lord, when I despise myself, I despise the very thing that you have made. A sin like that can’t possibly be unknown to me.

I pray not only for my own self-forgiveness but also for the self-forgiveness of others. Holding grudges can leave you feeling weak and vulnerable. Your Holy Word says, “For all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God.” May this truth help them accept their own imperfections (Romans 3:23).

Please, Lord, help us to see that “all of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags” as you cleanse and purify our hearts from unforgiveness (Isaiah 64:6). To put it bluntly, God, we are essentially flawed creations on this planet. Convince us that you love us in spite of our shortcomings, and help us to accept ourselves as we are. Please accept my sincere thanks, Amen.

Bible Verses About Guilt

Hebrews 10:22

22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.

James 2:10

10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.

Hebrews 10:2

Otherwise, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins.

Leviticus 5:17

17 “If anyone sins and does what is forbidden in any of the LORD’s commands, even though they do not know it, they are guilty and will be held responsible.

Psalms 32:1-6

Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.

Blessed is the one whose sin the LORD does not count against them and in whose spirit is no deceit.

When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long.

For day and night your hand was heavy on me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer.

Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD.” And you forgave the guilt of my sin.

Therefore let all the faithful pray to you while you may be found; surely the rising of the mighty waters will not reach them.
