Biblical Foundation
The Cana Wedding Feast is a scriptural illustration of Mary’s intercession (John 2:1-11). Mary approaches Jesus to assist the couple after realizing they are short of wine (vs 2). Jesus consents to carry it out, but He prefers to keep it under wraps since the time is not yet right for Him to reveal Himself as the Messiah (vs. 4). John 11:1-45
Let’s look at John 11:1-45.
Mary and her sister Martha are at the home of their brother Lazarus. Jesus is in Bethany, just outside of Jerusalem.
Lazarus is sick, so Mary and Martha send word to Jesus that he is sick and they wish for him to come heal him if possible. When Jesus arrives in Bethany, Martha goes out to meet him while Mary stays inside with Lazarus (John 11:28). She tells Jesus that if he had been here earlier, her brother wouldn’t have died (John 11:21). However, when Jesus raises Lazarus from death she praises God along with everyone else who witnessed it (John 11:33).
John 19:25-27
This passage from John 19:25-27 (NIV) explains why Jesus was thirsty on the cross. He knew that everything had now been finished and that the Scripture might be fulfilled. He said, “I am thirsty.” A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it and put the sponge on a hyssop branch and held it up to his lips. After Jesus received the drink, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
Jesus knew what was coming next because he had experienced it before (see John 12:32 NIV). This meant that he could fulfill all of God’s plan for him—and us—to come into this world as human beings in order to die for our sins and live again (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).
The Angel Visits Mary – Luke 1:26-56
Mary was visited by an angel and told she would give birth to the Son of God. Mary was filled with the Holy Spirit, so she asked how she could have a child when she had not been with a man. The angel told her that the Holy Spirit would come upon her and then told her about what would happen to Jesus.

The simple answer to your question is “Yes, you should refrain from praying to Mary and to the saints.”
Catholics pray to Mary (or to the saints) because, like the rest of us, they recognize their need for someone to help them bring their requests to a holy God. I think we all have some sense that we cannot stand in the presence of God on our own.
The Bible says, For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus… (1 Timothy 2:5). God’s Word tells us that Jesus Christ is the help we need – He is our “mediator” or go between with God. But we are never told in God’s Word that any other person, including Mary, or any of the saints, can serve as a mediator between us and God.
One of the reasons Catholics pray this way is that Roman Catholic teaching has elevated the teachings of certain leaders (including the pope’s) to have equal authority with the Word of God. So when a pope (some of whom were ungodly, especially in the Middle Ages) declared that the people could find help in prayer by praying to Mary or to the saints, it became part of Catholic dogma (or the teaching of the Catholic church), and these kinds of errors have been perpetuated over the centuries.
Whenever you place something alongside God’s Word as it’s equal, it always ends up becoming more prominent. So, in many Catholic circles, the teaching of the church has essentially eclipsed the teaching of the Bible, so that many Catholics know the teaching of the church (including praying to Mary and the saints) much better than they know the teaching of the Bible. This is unfortunate and sad, and it leads to many errors like this.
The good news is that we don’t need to pray to Mary or to the saints in order to be heard by God. Jesus made this wonderful promise: “Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son” (John 14:3). That means as a Christian believer you can pray with great confidence, knowing that your prayers will be heard by God and answered! You have Jesus’ promise.

It sounds like a ridiculous question for me to pose. It’s common knowledge that the Rosary didn’t take shape for at least another thousand years! Something stood out to me the other night however, which makes me think that the “soul” of the Rosary was always present in the Apostles’ prayer.
Jesus’ instruction at the time of His ascension was, “not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father…before many days you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” And the Apostles did just that: “All these with one accord devoted themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus , and with his brethren” (Acts 1:4-5, 14). That was how they spent the nine days between Jesus’ ascension and the descent of the Spirit on Pentecost.
