List Of Old Testament Quotes In The New Testament Pdf

Introduction

The Old Testament contains a number of prophecies about the coming of Christ. The New Testament, likewise, quotes from these prophecies and applies them to events that were occurring in the life of Jesus. This is one way that we can be certain that Jesus was who He claimed to be: the Son of God.

Old Testament References in the New Testament

The New Testament references to the Old Testament are numerous. In fact, there are more than 300 direct quotes in the New Testament from what has been called “the Hebrew Scriptures” or “the Old Testament.” The following is a list of some of these verses:

  • Matt 2:23-24 – [Jesus] was there about two years; and then he went down to Nazareth with his parents, and was obedient unto them; but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.
  • Matt 15:1-3 – Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, who said unto him…why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they wash not their hands when they eat bread…and thou hast made void thy commandments by thy traditions.
  • Matt 22:37-38 – Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with ALL THY MIND…then shalt thou find wisdom..
  • Mark 2:27-28 – And Jesus looking upon him loved him…And he said unto them that followed on foot Do ye come hither too?

Old Testament OT New Testament NT Scripture

The four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John are the foundation of the New Testament. They tell us about Jesus’ life on earth and how he came to redeem his people from their sins through his death and resurrection.

However, for a lot of people who have read through the Bible at least once in their lives (and even some who have read it multiple times), they may not know that there are many quotes from the Old Testament New Testament. These quotes can be found throughout both Testaments of Scripture as they help us understand God’s plan for redemption and Christ’s role in fulfilling this plan.

Old and New Testaments are referring to the same Scripture

All in all, the New Testament quotes from the Old Testament. If you take a look at any English translation of the Bible today, it will say something like “New International Version” or “King James Bible.” This is because we now have two different Bibles—one made up of books from before Jesus came to earth (the Old Testament) and one with words that were written after He came (the New Testament).

The problem with this approach lies in thinking about these books as “old” and “new.” People used to think that way when they thought each book was written by someone named Matthew, Mark or John. But once again, The authors’ names aren’t even in these books! And it turns out they weren’t written by any celebrity authors either; they were all inspired by God Himself through various prophets who lived long ago when life was difficult but full of hope because God loved His children so much He sent them prophets so they wouldn’t forget how great He is!

Matthew 4:4

Let us look at the following verses:

  • Matthew 4:4-7
  • Matthew 4:4-11
  • Matthew 4:4-12
  • Matthew 4:4-13
  • Matthew 4.14; Luke 1.68; 2.37; 3.2; Acts 1.5, 9, 13, 33; 5.1 (NIV); 1 John 2/17; Revelation 12/9/17

There are many common themes shared by both sets of writings and their authors but there are also some key differences between them which we will examine below as well as how these writings reflect our overall understanding of Jesus Christ’s mission on Earth across time and space from His perspective as well as ours today in 2017 A D .

Old Testament In The New Testament

  • Many of the references in the following table are direct quotations, while some are paraphrases or close allusions to older scriptural texts.
  • Some OT quotations in Matthew are closer to the Septuagint (ancient Greek translation of the OT) than to the Hebrew Bible (which is the basis of the NRSV-OT translation).

It is hard sometime to find specific tools to help you study – in the way that you want to study.

One of the things I looked for and had a hard time finding was a side-by-side comparison of the Older Covenants mentioned in the Newer Covenant (Old Testament/New Testament or Tanakh in the Brit Chadasha).

Sure, you can find some charts with verses numbers listed, but you have to check every one individually because few spell out the entire verse.  Unless you have memorized all of the verses, it is very time consuming to check each reference.  Many of these charts have mistakes and insertions that don’t line up or just plain aren’t in the text – the problem is since they only list the verse, you can spend considerable time checking each reference.  If they had just listed the verse in its entirety, you could verify visually quickly.

In frusteration, I decided to do my own and share them with you.  I give the entire verse so that it can be a resource that you can check both visually and quickly.  If I have missed one, feel free to comment.  Please give both the verse in the Brit Chadasha (New Testament) and the verse in the Tanakh (Old Testament).

The following is the Gospel of Mark

Mark 1:2 (CJB) It is written in the prophet Yesha‘yahu,“See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare the way before you.”Malachi 3:1 (CJB) “Look! I am sending my messenger to clear the way before me; and the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to his temple. Yes, the messenger of the covenant, in whom you take such delight — look! Here he comes,” says Adonai-Tzva’ot.
Mark 1:3 (CJB) “The voice of someone crying out: ‘In the desert prepare the way for Adonai! Make straight paths for him!’”Isaiah 40:3 (CJB) A voice cries out: “Clear a road through the desert for Adonai! Level a highway in the ‘Aravah for our God!

You certainly see, but you don’t get the point!’ 10 “Make the heart of this people [sluggish with] fat, stop up their ears, and shut their eyes. Otherwise, seeing with their eyes, and hearing with their ears, then understanding with their hearts, they might repent and be healed!”
Mark 7:6-7 (CJB) Yeshua answered them, “Yesha‘yahu was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites — as it is written,‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far away from me. Their worship of me is useless, because they teach man-made rules as if they were doctrines.’Isaiah 29:13 (CJB) 13 Then Adonaisaid:“Because these people approach me with empty words, and the honor they bestow on me is mere lip-service; while in fact they have distanced their hearts from me, and their ‘fear of me’ is just a mitzvah of human origin —
Mark 7:10 (CJB) 10 For Moshe said, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and ‘Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.’Exodus 20:12 (CJB) 12 ‏ה‎ 12 “Honor your father and mother, so that you may live long in the land which Adonai your God is giving you.Deuteronomy 5:16 (CJB)16 ‏ה‎ 16 “‘Honor your father and mother, as Adonai your God ordered you to do, so that you will live long and have things go well with you in the land Adonai your God is giving you.Exodus 21:17 (CJB)17 “Whoever curses his father or mother must be put to death.Leviticus 20:9 (CJB)“‘A person who curses his father or mother must be put to death; having cursed his father or his mother, his blood is on him.

Mark 10:4 (CJB) They said, “Moshe allowed a man to hand his wife a getand divorce her.”Deuteronomy 24:1 (CJB)“Suppose a man marries a woman and consummates the marriage but later finds her displeasing, because he has found her offensive in some respect. He writes her a divorce document, gives it to her and sends her away from his house.Deuteronomy 24:3 (CJB)but the second husband dislikes her and writes her a get, gives it to her and sends her away from his house; or the second husband whom she married dies.
Mark 10:6 (CJB) However, at the beginning of creation, God made them male and female.Genesis 1:27 (CJB) 27 So God created humankind in his own image; in the image of God he created him: male and female he created them.Genesis 5:2 (CJB)he created them male and female; he blessed them and called them Adam [humankind, man] on the day they were created.
Mark 10:7-8 (CJB) For this reason, a man should leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, and the two are to become one flesh. Thus they are no longer two, but one.Genesis 2:24 (CJB) 24 This is why a man is to leave his father and mother and stick with his wife, and they are to be one flesh.
Mark 10:19 (CJB) 19 You know the mitzvot — ‘Don’t murder, don’t commit adultery, don’t steal, don’t give false testimony, don’t defraud, honor your father and mother,…’”Exodus 20:12-13 (CJB) 12 ‏ה‎ 12 “Honor your father and mother, so that you may live long in the land which Adonai your God is giving you.13 ‏ו‎ 13 “Do not murder.Deuteronomy 5:16-17 (CJB) 16 ‏ה‎ 16 “‘Honor your father and mother, as Adonai your God ordered you to do, so that you will live long and have things go well with you in the land Adonai your God is giving you.17 ‏ו‎ 17 “‘Do not murder.

I can see for myself what’s going on,” says Adonai.
Mark 12:10-11 (CJB) 10 Haven’t you read the passage in the Tanakhthat says,‘The very rock which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone! 11 This has come from Adonai, and in our eyes it is amazing’?”Psalm 118:22-23 (CJB) 22 The very rock that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone! 23 This has come from Adonai, and in our eyes it is amazing.
Mark 12:19 (CJB) 19 “Rabbi, Moshe wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no child, his brother must take the wife and have children to preserve the man’s family line.Deuteronomy 25:5-6 (CJB) “If brothers live together, and one of them dies childless, his widow is not to marry someone unrelated to him; her husband’s brother is to go to her and perform the duty of a brother-in-law by marrying her. The first child she bears will succeed to the name of his dead brother, so that his name will not be eliminated from Isra’el.
Mark 12:26 (CJB) 26 And as for the dead being raised, haven’t you read in the book of Moshe, in the passage about the bush, how God said to him, ‘I am the God of Avraham, the God of Yitz’chak and the God of Ya‘akov’?Exodus 3:6 (CJB) I am the God of your father,” he continued, “the God of Avraham, the God of Yitz’chak and the God of Ya‘akov.” Moshe covered his face, because he was afraid to look at God.

Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai echad [Hear, Isra’el! Adonai our God, Adonai is one]; and you are to love Adonai your God with all your heart, all your being and all your resources.

For half of the week he will put a stop to the sacrifice and the grain offering. On the wing of detestable things the desolator will come and continue until the already decreed destruction is poured out on the desolator.”Daniel 11:31 (CJB)31 Armed forces will come at his order and profane the sanctuary and fortress. They will abolish the daily burnt offering and set up the abomination that causes desolation.Daniel 12:11 (CJB)11 From the time the regular burnt offering is taken away and the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days.
Mark 13:19 (CJB) 19 For there will be worse trouble at that time than there has ever been from the very beginning, when God created the universe, until now; and there will be nothing like it again.Joel 2:2 (CJB) a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick fog; a great and mighty horde is spreading like blackness over the mountains. There has never been anything like it, nor will there ever be again, not even after the years of many generations.Daniel 12:1 (CJB)“When that time comes, Mikha’el, the great prince who champions your people, will stand up; and there will be a time of distress unparalleled between the time they became a nation and that moment. At that time, your people will be delivered, everyone whose name is found written in the book.
Mark 13:24-25 (CJB) 24 In those days, after that trouble, the sun will grow dark, the moon will stop shining, 25 the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers in heaven will be shaken.Isaiah 13:10 (CJB) 10 For the stars, the constellations in the sky, will no longer give their light; the sun will be dark when it rises; and the moon will no longer shine.Isaiah 34:4 (CJB)The whole host of heaven will decompose, the heavens themselves be rolled up like a scroll; all their array will wither away like a withering grape-leaf that falls from a vine or a withered fig from a fig tree.Ezekiel 32:7 (CJB)When I extinguish you, I will cover the sky and make its stars black; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon will not give its light.Joel 2:10 (CJB)10 At their advance the earth quakes, and the sky shakes, the sun and moon turn black, and the stars stop shining.Joel 2:31 (CJB)31 The sun will be turned into darkness and the moon into blood before the coming of the great and terrible Day of Adonai.”Joel 3:15 (CJB)15 The sun and moon have grown black, and the stars have stopped shining.Haggai 2:6 (CJB)For this is what Adonai-Tzva’ot says: “It won’t be long before one more time I will shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land;Haggai 2:21 (CJB)21 “Tell Z’rubavel, governor of Y’hudah, ‘I will shake the heavens and the earth,

He approached the Ancient One and was led into his presence. 14 To him was given rulership, glory and a kingdom, so that all peoples, nations and languages should serve him. His rulership is an eternal rulership that will not pass away; and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.
Mark 14:27 (CJB) 27 Yeshua said to them, “You will all lose faith in me, for the Tanakhsays,‘I will strike the shepherd dead, and the sheep will be scattered.’Zechariah 13:7 (CJB) “Awake, sword, against my shepherd, against the man who is close to me,” says Adonai-Tzva’ot. “Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered; I will turn my hand against the young ones.

Luke 4:4

Matthew 4:4 says, “But He answered and said, ‘It is written,’ Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”

This quote comes from Deuteronomy 8:3. The quote here is about how man cannot live on bread alone. Jesus knew this because it was written in Deuteronomy 8:3.

The next verse (Matthew 4:5) says “Then the devil took Him up into the holy city” This quote was taken from Isaiah 61:1-2 which read as follows:”The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD has anointed me to preach good tidings unto you.—For he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted…to proclaim liberty to captives…and give sight to blind eyes.”

Finally we see another reference made in Matthew 4:6 where he quotes Isaiah 35 verse 5-6 “Then shall all peoples say Amen!”

John 5:39-40-46-47

John 5:39-40-46-47

We have already seen that the New Testament quotes from the Old Testament as a way of showing that Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s plan. This is seen in John 5:39, where Jesus says “You search the scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me.” He says this to his opponents, who are trying to find fault in him and his message. What he means is that if you will only look at what God has said in His Word, then you will see how truly faithful Jesus is (and he goes on to show how faithful he truly is).

Galatians 3:8,16,24

Galatians 3:8,16,24

“And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed. So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.” Galatians 3:16-19

“Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed… Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not elsewhere “and to seeds”, as of many; but as of one: “and to thy seed,” which is Christ.” Galatians 3:24

“Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster [tutor] until Christ came [but afterwards it has lost its authority], that we might be justified by faith.” Galatians 4:21-31

“Tell me ye that desire to be under law – do ye not hear how Paul maketh void and destroyeth laws? For he saith unto them who lived under law – Ye have become dead unto commandments which were ordained by angels in heaven; therefore now make yourselves alive through faith in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 5:1

“Stand fast therefore in liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free… Stand fast therefore an exercise your freedom; wherewith ye have been made free from sin may lose it again unless ye stand fast in this liberty wherewith Christ hath made you free”;

There are a number of references in the New Testament that point back to the Old Testament.

There are a number of references in the New Testament that point back to the Old Testament. In fact, there are two New Testament books which are just lists of allusions by Jesus and his apostles to various parts of the Old Testament. These two books are called “Ephesians” and “Revelation”.

The first book is Ephesians 6:17-18: “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword (sword of God) of the Spirit, which is the word [of God]; Praying at all times in every prayer and supplication in behalf of all saints; on my knees before God, who strengthens me…” (Ephesians 6:17-18)

In these verses we see that our armor is made up of various pieces that correspond to different parts or pieces found in our spiritual battle gear when we engage with Satan and his army on earth today. The three main pieces here are prayer (the helmet), faith (the shield), and truth from God’s Word (the sword). These three things should be kept close at hand for immediate use against Satan when he attacks us physically or spiritually!

Conclusion

By looking at the list of Old Testament quotes in the New Testament, we can see that it is a good idea to read both sections. The Old Testament contains prophecies about Jesus and the New Testament tells us what happened as those prophecies were fulfilled. However, there are many more references than just these few here. We also need to remember that there are some other books of scripture that do not appear in either section but do contain valuable information such as Psalms and Proverbs.
