One feature of this passage that may be unfamiliar for many readers today is its strong focus on praising God every morning when you awake (v. 6). This was common practice among ancient Jews who would say prayers or sing songs as they got ready for their day; but modern readers may find it odd because we don’t typically start our days with such an intense focus on prayer and worship! However, if we give this idea some thought we might realize how helpful it could be: thanking God while we’re getting dressed seems like something anyone could do—and yet how often do we actually do so?
