60 Abomination List In The Bible

The Bible has a lot of rules. It’s not just a bunch of random rules either—it’s a book that details what it means to be a good person and how we can live our lives in accordance with God’s will. But sometimes, those rules can seem confusing or even contradictory. That’s where the lists of sins that are an abomination to God in the Bible come in. The 60-abomination list in the Bible is great for organizing information about the do’s and don’ts of the Bible. Lists of abominations in the Bible are also great for taking common ideas and making them sound more official and authoritative.

Let’s get something straight. The Bible doesn’t contain abomination lists. This is a ruse that critics of God’s word have started with the intention of sanitizing God’s image and rewriting the Christian faith. They lie that what is written on these so-called lists were things God told Moses to write. But let’s examine why this isn’t true.

First, they are unaware of the proper definition of an abomination and how it is used within the Bible.

Second, they don’t acknowledge that these lists are repetitious and not one comprehensive list.

Third, they use anti-Semitic accusations to accuse the Jews of creating such a list, effectively making them guilty of being a deceiver to destroy the truth of God.

But, as we shall see, this is just a ruse for Christians to be deceived and not look into the matter further. When you’re writing a blog post, it’s important to get your audience invested in the topic—even if that means starting out with a joke.

The Bible is a book full of contradictions. It’s a collection of stories, poems, songs and prayers, and it contains a wide range of viewpoints that represent different people from different cultures at different times. But some things in it are just too weird to be explained away as simple differences in time or culture. Here are 60 things from the Bible that are just too weird:

  1. God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh day (Genesis 2:2-3).
  2. God killed all but eight humans with a flood (Genesis 6–8).
  3. God drowned all land animals except for those that were on Noah’s Ark (Genesis 6:17).
  4. God killed Hagar’s son Ishmael because Ishmael mocked Isaac (Genesis 21:9–10).
  5. God punished David by making his childless wife pregnant with Solomon (1 Kings 11:11–13).
  6. God punished David by killing Uzzah for touching the ark while trying to keep it from falling over on him (2 Samuel 6:6-7).
  7. God told Moses not to look at his face because he would die if he did so.

What Sins Are An Abomination To God

1. Pride

Pride is considered one of the deadliest sins in the Bible. It is the belief that one is superior to others and does not need God. Proverbs 16:5 states, “Everyone who is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord; assuredly, he will not be unpunished.”

2. Envy

Envy is the desire for someone else’s possessions or qualities. It is listed as one of the seven deadly sins and is condemned in multiple verses in the Bible. Proverbs 14:30 says, “A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.”

3. Wrath

Anger or wrath is another sin that is considered an abomination to God. Ephesians 4:31 warns, “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.”

4. Lust

Lust is the intense desire or craving for something, often of a sexual nature. It is condemned in the Bible as a sin that goes against God’s will. Matthew 5:28 states, “But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

5. Greed

Greed is the excessive desire for money or material possessions. It is warned against in the Bible, with 1 Timothy 6:10 stating, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”

6. Gluttony

Gluttony is the overindulgence in food or drink. Proverbs 23:20-21 advises, “Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.”

7. Sloth

Sloth is laziness or a lack of motivation to do work or accomplish tasks. It is condemned in the Bible, with Proverbs 18:9 stating, “One who is slack in his work is brother to one who destroys.”

8. Deceit

Deceit is the act of misleading or deceiving others. It is considered an abomination to God, with Proverbs 12:22 declaring, “The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy.”

Lying lips are abomination to the Lord.” (Prov. 12:22). A lying tongue stems from a dishonest heart. People lie for different reasons. Some auto dealers lie to sell automobiles. Some politicians lie to win an election. Some preachers lie to gain wealth. Rom 16:17,18; 1 Tim 6:3-10

There is no justification for one to lie to another. No matter the reason why one lies, the scriptures reveal that ALL LIARS shall have their part in the lake of fire. Rev 21:8

“Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who deal truthfully are His delight.” Prov 12:22

Jeremiah spoke about the prophet who spoke lies, prophesying of their own heart to deceive the righteous to turn from God. He said, “Let he that has my Word, let him speak my Word faithfully.” Jer 23:28 Paul wrote, “For we are not like many, peddling the word of God, but as from sincerity, but as from God, we speak in Christ in the sight of God.” 2 Cor 2:17

9. Idolatry

Idolatry is the worship of idols or false gods. It is forbidden in the Ten Commandments, with Exodus 20:3 stating, “You shall have no other gods before me.”

10. Murder

Murder is the act of taking someone else’s life. It is one of the Ten Commandments and is condemned in the Bible. Exodus 20:13 states, “You shall not murder.”

“Shedding innocent blood” is a reference to  ‘murder.” God hates the murderer. Jezebel and Ahab were guilty of this sin when they slaughtered innocent Naboth in order to make his family inheritance, his vineyard, their own. 1Kgs. 21

A physician, who is trained to save life, uses their medical instruments to kill an innocent unborn baby, (Abortion). Those hands which should be healing and ministering to the sick are being used to slaughter the innocent. This is an abomination to God!

God condemns murderers from the very beginning. It was Cain who murdered righteous Abel. Mt 23:35 It was the Jews who murdered an innocent Jesus. Mt 27:24,25 Anyone who kills, or attempts to kill the righteous is an abomination to God. Deut 19:10; Isa 59:7,8

11. A Heart That Devises Wickedness

“The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the Lord” Prov. 15:26. Before wickedness is committed, it is planned and plotted. One example is given in Proverbs chapter 1.

My son, if sinners entice thee, consent not. If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privately for the innocent without cause: let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit: we shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil Prov 11-13.

Wicked men devised wicked plans. Whenever a robbery is committed, someone devised wicked plans. Every pornographic movie or magazine is demonstration that someone spent their time devising wickedness to tempt the weakness of man to make gain of him. Isa 57:14 God abhors this kind of heart.

How Many Times Is Abomination Used In The Bible

The word abomination is used 10 times in the Bible.

The first time it appears is in Deuteronomy 7:25, where God tells Moses to tell the children of Israel that they must “utterly destroy” seven things: “the Hittites and the Amorites, the Canaanites and the Perizzites, the Hivites and the Jebusites.” Those seven things are called abominations by God.

In Leviticus 20:1-5, God gives Moses instructions on what will happen to anyone who commits an abomination with animals. For example, if someone has sex with an animal or sacrifices an animal to another god, they must be put to death.

In Ezekiel 16:50-52, God lists many different sins that people commit against him, including idolatry and adultery. He calls these sins abominations because they are so disgusting that he doesn’t want to even look at them—they make him sick!

Is Abomination Worse Than Sin

Abomination is a term that refers to something that is considered to be deeply offensive and disgusting. The Bible contains a list of things that are considered abominable, and this list has changed over time. It is also important to note that there are several different versions of this list in the Bible.

In the book of Leviticus, there is a list of things that are considered abominable for the Israelites to do. These include eating meat from an animal that has been killed by other animals (Leviticus 7:18-19), wearing clothes made from two different kinds of materials (Leviticus 19:19), having sex with someone who is engaged or married (Leviticus 18:20), having sex with your mother-in-law (Leviticus 20:14), touching any dead body (Leviticus 21:1) and having sex with your daughter-in-law after she has had her menstrual period (Leviticus 20:12).

The people who wrote these laws believed that these actions would cause God’s anger against them and their land would be cursed because they were treating God’s commands as if they were worthless. However, many scholars believe that some of these laws were designed to protect people from

Definition And Meaning Of Abomination
Abomination is defined as anything abominable; anything greatly disliked or abhorred. It points to an intense aversion or loathing as well as a vile, detestable, or shameful action, condition, and/or habit. The meaning of abomination in the Bible can be better understood as an expression of the idea that the Egyptians considered themselves as defiled when they ate with strangers (Genesis 43:32). The Jews subsequently followed the same practice, holding it unlawful to eat and/or drink with strangers/foreigners (John 18:28; Acts 10:28; 11:3). Unto the Egyptians, every shepherd was “an abomination” (Genesis 46:34). This dislike to shepherds, such as the Hebrews, arose probably from the fact that Lower and Middle Egypt had formerly been held in oppressive subjection by a tribe of nomad shepherds (the Hyksos), who had only been recently expelled. Also, the Egyptians detested the lawless habits of these wandering shepherds.

What The Scriptures Say About Abomination
Abomination is used symbolically of sin in general (Isaiah 66:3); an idol (Isaiah 44:19); the ceremonies of the apostate church of Rome (Revelation 17:4); and a detestable act (Ezekiel 22:11). Occult practices are also called an abomination in Scripture, as is child sacrifice (Deuteronomy 18:9–12; 20:18; 2 Chronicles 28:3). The Scriptures reveal other abominations in God’s sight to be ungodly sexual relationships like homosexuality and adultery (Leviticus 18:22–29; 20:13; Deuteronomy 24:4), imperfect sacrifices (Deuteronomy 17:1), cross-dressing (Deuteronomy 22:5), wickedness (Proverbs 15:9, 26), dishonest business dealings (Deuteronomy 25:13–16; Proverbs 11:1; 20:10, 23), turning deaf ear to God’s instructions (Proverbs 28:9), hypocritical offerings from the unrepentant (Proverbs 15:8; Isaiah 1:13), and partaking in injustice (Proverbs 17:15).

Most of the Biblical references to that which is abominable or detestable come in God’s Law in the book of Leviticus and Deuteronomy, in prophecies declaring God’s judgment against Israel, and in Proverbs. Proverbs 6 reveals a list of seven things that God calls an abomination: “There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers” (Proverbs 6:16–19). Likewise, Jesus tells the Pharisees in Luke 16:15 – “What is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.” The context of this statement is a rebuke of the Pharisees’ love of money.

More on what the Scriptures say about Abomination
Titus 1:16 tells us that false teachers may “claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.” Daniel and Jesus both predicted the abomination of desolation that would corrupt the holy place of the temple (Matthew 24:15; Daniel 9:27). Likewise related to the end times, the whore of Babylon is pictured as holding “a golden cup in her hand, filled with abominable things and the filth of her adulteries” (Revelation 17:4). She is regarded as the mother of all the abominations on Earth (Revelation 17:5) and identified as “the great city that rules over the kings of the earth” (Revelation 17:18). And it is without a single doubt that this city with all of its loathsome acts will be destroyed (Revelation 17: 16-17).

Moving from idolatry to ungodly sexual relationships to unfair scales to wickedness of various kinds, abominations separate people from God. In fact, we can say that all sin (missing the mark of God’s perfection) can be considered an abomination. Behold, all sin separates us from God and is detestable to Him (Romans 3:23; 6:23; Proverbs 15:9). God’s hatred of sin makes Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross at Calvary all the more remarkable. The Bible makes us understand that it was at the Cross that “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21). By suffering and dying for our sins, Jesus Christ identified Himself with the Psalmist: “I am a worm and not a man, scorned by everyone, despised by the people” (Psalm 22:6).

The Seven Abominations

Proverbs 6:16–19

These six things does the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto Him:

A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

An heart that devises wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,

A false witness that speaks lies, and he that sows discord among brethren.

An abomination is a repulsive thing. If you were to ever find a dead rat lying beside you in your bed, you would no doubt find it repulsive and wish to dispense of it quickly! There are seven “dead rats” about men, women, and children that God finds repulsive.

Abomination #1—the Proud Look. Even the slightest appearance of pride in one’s facial expressions is repulsive to God. Of all of the sins that humans commit, this is probably the most fundamental sin of all. It is the root from which grow all kinds of poisonous plants that corrupt the human soul. Pride insists on the accolades of others. Pride is always comparing oneself with others, seeking preeminence over them.

Abomination #2—the Lying Tongue. We understand the world and interpret our experiences by means of the truth of God’s Word. When we fail to be honest with ourselves and others concerning our experiences (as properly understood and interpreted by the Word of God), then we lie to ourselves and others. Typically, we lie when we do not want to face bad news. When a mother asks her son whether he has taken a cookie in disobedience to her, he may wish to lie in order to protect himself. The truth of the matter is that he has dishonored his mother, as defined by the law of God, and he stands guilty before his mother and before God. He has broken both the fifth and the eighth commandments. It is only at the point where we are willing to face the truth, admit to it, and accept bad news, that we will be ready to receive the good news of God’s mercy and salvation.

Abomination #3—the Hands that Shed Innocent Blood. Just as abominable as pride and lying are the hands that shed innocent blood. While condemning abortion and murder, Christians ought to be careful to condemn all other abominations as well. As a nation and as a family, we have much over which we ought to repent in tears and confession before God.

Abomination #4—the Heart that Devises Wicked Imaginations. How often do people “reserve the right” to sin sometime in the future? They will not close the door to sin in their mind. Sometimes, they will form “interesting” and evil fantasies in their minds that they will attempt to play out in life.

Abomination #5—the Feet that Are Swift in Running to Mischief. Notice that the entire body is engaged in all of this wicked behavior. While it is the heart that devises wicked imaginations, the feet (and other parts of the body) join forces to implement the plan. These violent, sinful acts are performed swiftly so as not to be waylaid by guilty feelings, wise counselors, or second thoughts.

Abomination #6—A False Witness that Speaks Lies. Those who publicly accuse another of a sin he did not commit, believing something he does not believe (by constructing straw men arguments), are reprehensible to God. This calls for us to be precise in our analysis of what others say and do before we take issue with them.

Abomination #7—He that Sows Discord Among the Brethren. While we are to remain enemies with the world and hate those who hate God (Ps. 139:21), we have a solemn duty to always strive for the unity of the brethren (Ps. 133, Eph. 4:1–4). To a divisive church in Corinth, God issued a most severe warning that He would destroy anybody who had the gall to divide and destroy His church (1 Cor. 3:17). Unity is precious to God, so it ought to be so to us as well. Where do wicked, divisive people come from? Usually discord is first nurtured by sibling rivalry and fighting in the home. This is why it is important to correct any disunity, prideful competition, selfish ambition, and envy when those sins manifest themselves in family life.

What Sins Are an Abomination to God

According to the King James Version of the Bible, “abomination” is used 15 times.

The word “abomination” is used in Leviticus 18:22, 20:13 and Deuteronomy 12:31 to refer to things that are considered offensive to God.

It is also used in Ezekiel 8:15-18 and 11:21-23 to describe practices of other religions that are considered offensive by God.

In addition, it appears in Exodus 11:8-10, Isaiah 65:4-5 and 2 Kings 23:13-14 when discussing practices related to idolatry or pagan worship practices.

The word “abomination” is used in the Bible to describe the things that God hates, and the things that God loves.

In the Old Testament, abomination is used to describe a host of sins: idolatry (Deut. 7:25), child sacrifice (Deut. 12:31), homosexuality (Lev. 18:22), and eating meat with blood still in it (Lev. 17:10-14).

In the New Testament, abomination is used to describe Jesus’ crucifixion (Mark 15:28) and his resurrection and ascension (Acts 2:23).

But it’s also used when God loves something: the law of Moses (Psalm 119:128), God’s word (1 Cor. 2:13), and even Jesus himself (Heb. 12:16)!
