The Lion of Judah, also known as the Hebrew: ארור, is a metaphoric phrase for the tribe of Judah and their ruling line (the House of David), based on their association with the Biblical tribal emblem or Judah’s supposed descent from an extinct race of prehistoric people called the “Bnei Judae”, in view of which lion is actually a pun. The phrase was widely used during classical antiquity, but became especially notable during the Middle Ages when Christians saw themselves as descendants of Judah through his lineage in Jesus Christ.
