This is the standard order of service template for any birthday celebration in the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in Nigeria. It is usually followed by children but adults are eligible to use this order of service too.
The birthday celebration is a time to gather together, rejoice and be grateful for the life of the birthday person. It is also an opportunity to thank God for His mercies towards us and pray for the recipients of this special day.
The order of service for a birthday celebration is as follows:
- The Invocation (A prayer) – This prayer should be led by the celebrant or an elder with a background in preaching or teaching.
- The Readings – Readings from Scriptures are usually read before the sermon. The readings may be from the Old Testament or New Testament; however, it is important that they have relevance to the occasion at hand. In some cases, readings from Psalms will be appropriate as well. If there is only one reading then it should be from Ephesians 5:8-10: “For you were once darkness but now you are light in the Lord; walk as children of light (for the fruit of light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth), finding out what pleases the Lord.” If there are two or more readings then they should be selected from different parts of Scripture such as Psalm 23:1-6; John 1:1-12;
This is a birthday service that is used in the House of Prayer (RCCG). It is a simple and easy way to welcome those who come before God to celebrate their birthday. This includes the name of the person being celebrated, the date of birth, their age and time of birth.
