We all feel it—the literal heart beating faster—when we feel frustrated, angry, or need to express ourselves. In the waking state, this is the physical reaction of our body when we are alive and kicking. But in spiritual terms, what does a heart beating fast mean? This article shows you what the meaning of a heart beating fast is.
The heart is the most vital and important muscle in the human body. Not only that, it is also the center of feelings and emotions. In Hinduism, one believes that a human being can attain divine position by practicing and propagating unselfish love (the highest form of love). Keeping this in mind, I think we can never understand what love really means until we get a feel for what our hearts are doing right now. The interesting fact about the human heart is that the responsibility of pumping blood to every corner of our body rests solely on the heart. And with so much workload on its shoulders, it should not come as a surprise if sometimes it seems affected by fatigue and stress without us realizing it. Yet, the heart beats faster whenever we fall in love with someone or are thrilled about something. It keeps on beating faster for your loved one (or for your business) because you’re so closely attached to them that there is no space left for other people in your life.
When you have been praying, your heart beats faster as an indication that you are receiving a response from God through prayer. It happens to me regularly. In fact, it has become so common that when I don’t get a response, I am mildly surprised. As the years go by and my faith in God grows stronger, I find that my heart pounds faster than ever for Him.
Spiritual Meaning of Heart Beating Fast
1. Increased Energy and Alignment
One possible spiritual interpretation of a fast heartbeat is an increase in energy and alignment with our higher self or spiritual purpose. Just as the heart pumps blood to nourish our physical body, a fast heartbeat can indicate that our spiritual energy is flowing more rapidly, causing an amplified awareness of our true essence. This accelerated rhythm signifies a heightened connection to the divine energy within us and a sign of alignment with our authentic self.
Furthermore, a fast heartbeat can also be a response to intense spiritual experiences or moments of profound insight. When we are deeply engaged in meditation, prayer, or any other spiritual practice, our heart may race as it attempts to cope with the surge of divine energy flowing through us. It serves as a reminder that we are opening ourselves up to a spiritual awakening and that our heart is expanding to welcome new understandings.
2. Emotional Activation and Transformation
Another way to approach the spiritual meaning of a fast heartbeat is through the lens of emotional activation and transformation. Emotions often vibrate at a high frequency, leading to physical sensations in the body, including an increased heart rate. When our heart starts beating fast, it may be an indication that we are experiencing a powerful emotional response or going through a transformative process.
This intense emotional activation could arise from various spiritual practices, such as reciting mantras, engaging in self-reflection, or even during moments of deep connection with others. It acts as a signal that emotional wounds are being healed, negative patterns are being released, and our heart is undergoing a profound transformation. Rather than stifling these emotions, we should embrace them as catalysts for growth and spiritual evolution.
3. Spiritual Awakening and Expansion
A fast heartbeat can also be seen as a precursor to a spiritual awakening and expansion of consciousness. When our spiritual awareness begins to expand, it often activates dormant energy within us, leading to a faster heartbeat. This surge of energy stimulates our inner being, pushing us towards a state of heightened awareness, spiritual insights, and the realization of our true nature.
Moreover, a fast heartbeat in the context of a spiritual journey signifies that we are on the right path. It reassures us that we are ready to dive deeper into our spirituality and embark on a transformative journey of self-discovery. It urges us to pay attention to the spiritual signs around us and embrace the opportunities for growth and enlightenment that lie ahead.
While a fast heartbeat may initially cause alarm or worry, within the spiritual realm it can hold a deeper significance. It often represents an increase in energies, emotional activation, and spiritual awakening. Rather than fearing the rapid rhythm of our heart, we should embrace it as a sign of progress, transformation, and connection to the divine. Our fast-beating heart is a reminder that we are alive, vibrant, and engaged in the beautiful dance of spiritual evolution.
Heart palpitations spiritual warfare
Our entire spiritual energy moves up a frequency range and modifies the harmony at which our subtle body resonates when we experience spiritual awakening.
Put somewhat more simply, we are receiving spiritual energy.
One or more of the chakra energy centers frequently become overloaded during spiritual awakening because our subtle body is only capable of withstanding so much energy flow. This is typically the time that symptoms start to show themselves.
Often, sensations like palpitations are the only indicators that we are experiencing a spiritual awakening.
Angina is a severe episode of heart pain brought on by low oxygen levels.
The white rabbit from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, who is hurriedly checking his pocket watch and whining, is a fitting representation of this illness.
“I’m running late, I’m running late, for a really important date.”
Angina is a high-achieving perfectionist who is constantly hurried and irritable. The attacks serve as a stark message that although they appear to be very busy, their inner lives and the lives of those they care about are being neglected.
Arrhythmia’s Spiritual Cause
Heart rate swings, or arrhythmia, are caused by a self-made individual who believes they must manage everything on their own. Palpitations may follow anxiety episodes when things spiral out of control and beyond their capacity for coping.
Spiritual Meaning Of Heart Beating Fast
The spiritual meaning of heart beating fast is that you are experiencing an intense feeling of love. This is a sign that you have strong feelings for someone and they may be reciprocated.
If your heart rate increases when thinking about the person, this means that you are likely to experience a romantic relationship with them in the near future.
The heart is the center of our being. It is the source of our emotions and feelings. When we feel love, joy, or excitement, it’s because our heart is beating fast.

Most causes of a rapid heartbeat are not dangerous. However, a faster than usual heartbeat can be a symptom of an underlying health problem.
This article looks at what can cause a person’s heart to beat faster, treatments, and when to see a doctor.
Why Does My Heart Feel Heavy Spiritually
Response to strong emotions
Stressful emotionsTrusted Source, such as anxiety, anger, and fear, can cause a person’s heart rate to increase.
When the body experiences stress, the adrenal glands release epinephrine, or adrenaline. The body has two adrenal glands, one on top of each kidney.
The body uses epinephrine to prepare a person for immediate action. Epinephrine can cause a person to experience:
- increased heart rate
- increased blood pressure
- enlarged pupils
- palpitations, where the heart rate can increase, decrease, or feel like it has skipped a beat
- sweating
- anxiety
Generally, a person should find that their symptoms decrease once they no longer feel stress.
Treatment
A person who experiences stressful emotions regularly may be at risk of developing certain conditions. The American Psychological Association (APA) note that chronic stress can increase a person’s chances of developing certain conditions, such as high blood pressure, heart attack, or stroke.
A person may be able to manage their stress in the following waysTrusted Source:
- exercising regularly
- engaging in relaxing activities, such as meditation or massage
- setting goals and priorities
- speaking to friends and family for emotional support or help
- talking with a doctor or healthcare provider
Response to certain drugs
Substances that can cause a person’s heartbeat to speed up include:
Caffeine
Caffeine is a stimulant found in many drinks, such as coffee, tea, certain sodas, and energy drinks. Caffeine powder is also available as a dietary supplement.
The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) suggest that an adult could have up to 400 milligrams (mg) of caffeine per dayTrusted Source, which is around 4 or 5 cups of coffee. However, the amount of caffeine a person can consume without adverse effects depends on their caffeine sensitivity.
A person who has too much caffeine may experience:
- insomnia
- feeling jittery
- anxiety
- fast heart rate
- upset stomach
- nausea
- a headache
- a feeling of unhappiness
Alcohol
A study from 2014 found that even a small amount of alcohol can increase a person’s chances of developing atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation is a condition that causes a person’s heart to beat irregularly and sometimes abnormally fast.
A further study from 2017 tested people’s breath for alcohol concentration levels. Researchers found that as a person’s alcohol concentration level increased, so did their heart rate.
Nicotine
Nicotine is a highly addictive chemical found in cigarettes. According to the AHA, nicotine can cause increased Trusted Source blood pressure and heart rate.
Research from 2016 noted that nicotine could increase a person’s heart rate by 10–15 beats per minute (BPM)Trusted Source. Researchers also pointed out that a person’s heart rate and blood pressure increased regardless of whether the nicotine was smoked, inhaled, or ingested.
Illegal stimulants
Illegal stimulants, such as cocaine and amphetamines, can cause a person to have a higher heart rate.
Research from 2014Trusted Source found that people who use cocaine were more likely to experience irregular or increased heart rates.
Doctors sometimes use amphetamines to treat people who have ADHD or narcolepsy. However, amphetamines can cause a series of side effects, including:
- high blood pressure
- elevated heart rate
- a headache
- dry mouth
- abdominal cramps
- nausea
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- chills or fever
- dizziness
- tremors
- restlessness
Certain medications
According to the United Kingdom’s National Health Service (NHS), certain medications can cause a person to have an irregular heartbeat. These medications include:
- inhalers
- high blood pressure medication
- antihistamines
- antifungal medication
- antidepressants
- antibiotics
Certain supplements
Certain herbal supplements can increase a person’s heart rate, such as:
Bitter orange: People might use bitter orange for heartburn, nasal congestion, weight loss, appetite suppression or stimulation, and athletic performance. Certain studies state that it can cause Trusted Source rapid heartbeat; however, the results were inconclusive.
Valerian: Valerian is a supplement used for anxiety, insomnia, depression, premenstrual syndrome, headache, and menstrual issues. Side effects Trusted Source of taking valerian can include heart disturbances, such as a rapid heartbeat, headache, upset stomach, uneasiness, excitability, mental dullness, and insomnia.

If a person is dependent on a particular drug, they should consider speaking to a healthcare worker or counselor to discuss treatment options.
If a person has a rapid heart rate after taking certain medications or supplements, they can speak to their doctor to see if there is an alternative medication they can take.
Hormonal changes
An increase in heart rate may occur during pregnancy. This can happen because the heart has to pump blood to the placenta and around the body.
A study from 2019Trusted Source found that, on average, a pregnant person’s heart rate increased by 7–8 beats per minute (bpmTrusted Source). The same study also found that the average heart rate increased throughout pregnancy. A person’s average heart rate at 10 weeks was 79.3 bpm, which increased to 86.9 bpm by 40 weeks.

Heart Beating Fast For No Reason
Heart Pain Spiritual Meaning
Most cases of chest discomfort, heaviness, and tightness can be traced back to one or more of the following psychological and spiritual triggers.
Some cases of chest pain may be attributed to spiritual troubles, even though the majority of occurrences of chest pain are caused by physical conditions such as heart disease or infection.
1) Signal for Soul
It signals from the soul that an impending threat is high, while others maintain that it is a sign from God that the individual in question needs to make amends.
Some people are even under the impression that the discomfort is brought by disrupting the energy fields surrounding the heart.
Whatever the root of the problem, experiencing chest pain on a spiritual level can be rather uncomfortable.
2) Tension and Nervousness
Chest pain may have its roots in the spiritual realm in the form of tension and worry.
Many people who suffer from chest discomfort are under the impression that this is a message from God telling them to make important changes in their lives.
If the person who is suffering chest discomfort is also coping with a considerable amount of stress in their life, it may be time for them to seek assistance; nevertheless, this is a decision that can be tough to make.
There are a lot of different approaches to dealing with tension and nervousness, but often, the first step is just to acknowledge that there is a problem.
3) Shame and a sense of unfulfilled potential
Pain in the chest is a frequent symptom that various medical issues can bring on.
On the other hand, feelings of remorse and disappointment are typical reasons for chest pain.
These feelings make people’s hearts feel as if they are being compressed, which is why they generally surface when individuals are thinking about something they feel guilty about or something they regret doing.
We quickly blame ourselves when we fail to show someone the warmth or concern we believe we should.
It’s possible that we feel our words or deeds failed to convey how much we care or that the other person was just too challenging for us to deal with.
But the fact is that we do not always have control over how other people feel or react. We can do nothing to alter the situation in some circumstances.
4) Unhappy Relations
The right side of the chest area might be interpreted as a reference to one’s physical links to other people, such as:
- Colleagues at work;
- Business clients;
- Your boss;
- Etc.
The patient’s description of pain in the chest’s right side may indicate that they are unhappy with those relationships.
5) Feeling of Disappointment
The left side of the chest often referred to as the bosom, is typically used to refer to the feeling of being welcomed by a close friend or loved one.
If you have pain in this chest region, it may be a sign that you are experiencing a lack of intimacy or are disappointed.
6) Symbol of Family
The breasts, or the center of the chest, are a symbol of our family.
So, it’s our guilt that’s to fault for the discomfort we feel in our chests.
It shows that we believe we lack the skills necessary to take care of our elders and nurture future generations.
7) Self-Blame
When assigning blame, there are a few important details to remember:
- First and foremost, we need to remind ourselves not to be too hard on ourselves.
- Second, feeling guilty about something you did might make your chest hurt.
8) Medical and Spiritual relation
When there is a blockage in the blood vessels that supply the heart, this might lead to a heart attack.
If the blood flow is not rapidly restored, there will be irreversible damage to the heart muscle.
When you have a heart attack, it means that a significant amount of “active” energy that has been building up in your body has been released all at once.
It is a manifestation of all the rage, anxiety, and depression you have felt in the past, but now these feelings are working against you since there is no other outlet for them.
9) Other causes ( medical related)
When the heart muscle is deprived of oxygen-rich blood, a disease known as angina pectoris develops.
Recognizing and treating this condition, along with making certain modifications to one’s lifestyle, can reduce the risk of a heart attack, while it is not a disease in and of itself.
Heart Palpitations Spiritual Warfare
Spiritual warfare. It’s a term that conjures all sorts of visual representations. And it probably varies greatly by culture. I can’t claim to be all that knowledgeable about it, and I have kept my life mostly ignorant of the concept. I like to live in my little bubble where God protects his sheep from the workings of the wolf-like Devil.
And God doe, in fact, protect his sheep. However, it does not preclude his sheep from growing in their walk with God (their discipleship). Additionally, that doesn’t discount the fact that the Devil gets to use earth as a playground for distraction, deception, distortion, and destruction.
As I ponder Edwards’ 18th resolution, I am mindful of the fact that spiritual warfare is a very real happening in our world. Moreover, we have to be diligent in our pursuit of broader discipleship so we are able to stand firm in our faith while inhabiting a world that wants to pronounce us guilty as we are fulfilling our divine calling.
Jonathan Edwards Resolution 18
Edwards’ Resolution #18 (as it was written) Resolved, to live so at all times, as I think is best in my devout frames, and when I have clearest notions of things of the gospel, and another world.
Edwards’ Resolution #18 (in my modernized language) To live consistent in the way I should when I’m thinking spiritually and/or contemplating eternal truths.
Spiritual Warfare is Real
There’s so many things vying for our attention in life. That makes it so easy to grow complacent. So easy to fall into the trappings of pleasure and personal reward. Before we know it, we’re undisciplined in our ways. And we’re completely ignorant of priorities and the work we’re called to do.
That work, remember, is to glorify our God.
An undisciplined life is not one that glorifies God.
Make no mistake about it, we are at war. Battling against the worldly pleasures, which Scripture often refers to as ways of the flesh. But don’t allow the Devil deceive you or distort you into being asleep at the wheel. In fact, Scripture also tells us to be on guard against this sort of warfare.
Be prepared. You’re up against far more than you can handle on your own. Take all the help you can get, every weapon God has issued, so that when it’s all over but the shouting you’ll still be on your feet. Truth, righteousness, peace, faith, and salvation are more than words. Learn how to apply them. You’ll need them throughout your life. God’s Word is an indispensable weapon. In the same way, prayer is essential in this ongoing warfare. Pray hard and long. Pray for your brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes open. Keep each other’s spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out. – Ephesians 6:16-18 MSG
Discipleship is Necessary
The best way to glorify God – to fulfill our Heavenly mandate – is to know and walk with God. While living as aliens in a culture that has largely departed from God, we witness our societal deterioration. Our culture deliberately distances itself from God. And it’s easy to follow suit.
We must not fall into a misguided thought that this is an okay way to pursue our calling. We must be intentional about connecting with God. About knowing him. Understanding his ways. Growing closer to God and having the discipline it requires to stand out among a darkened nation that needs to see God’s light.
So let God work his will in you. Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him scamper. Say a quiet yes to God and he’ll be there in no time. Quit dabbling in sin. Purify your inner life. Quit playing the field. Hit bottom, and cry your eyes out. The fun and games are over. Get serious, really serious. Get down on your knees before the Master; it’s the only way you’ll get on your feet. – James 4:8-10 MSG
Stand Firm in Faith…
I know how great this makes you feel, even though you have to put up with every kind of aggravation in the meantime. Pure gold put in the fire comes out of it proved pure; genuine faith put through this suffering comes out proved genuine. When Jesus wraps this all up, it’s your faith, not your gold, that God will have on display as evidence of his victory – 1 Peter 6-7 MSG
There was never a promise made that following Jesus would be easy. In fact, we’re promised that it will not always be an easy road traveled, However, those that run the race the win – a win that is, in fact, promised – shall gain the reward of eternal life in Heaven.
Meanwhile, here in the land “under the sun,” the Devil is ever prowling like a lion. Mind you, not a friendly mascot-like lion – though he’d have you believe it. No, the Devil is like a vicious, supernatural lion seeking to tear us limb from limb.
But he’s much more devious and maniacal. He’s downright methodical when it comes to spiritual warfare.
He starts in the heart – and that’s precisely why we must give ours over to the Lord.
