Bethlehem
Bethlehem is a Palestinian city located in the central West Bank, Palestine, about 10 km south of Jerusalem. It is the largest city in the West Bank and its economic center. Bethlehem has a population of 50,000 people and a total area of 7 square kilometers (2.7 sq mi).
The city was originally established as a Canaanite town in the Bronze Age (c 2000 BC) by an Israelite tribe named Ephrathites which means “daughter of my people”. It later became one of five Judean cities built during King David’s rule over Israel. The city has been referred to as “The City of David” since at least 100 CE During Roman times it was known as Beit Lehem meaning House of Bread because bread was baked there for Jewish pilgrims passing through on their way to Jerusalem or Jericho.
