Where In The Bible Does It Talk About Tithe

Tithing, or giving one tenth of all your income to your church, is a practice that dates back to the Old Testament. In the book of Genesis, God told Abraham: “Now this is what the Lord has commanded you to do: Honor your father and mother, and keep my Sabbaths holy. You will live long in the land that I will give you.” (Genesis 21:1-3).

This passage can be read as a precursor to tithing, because it establishes how Abraham’s descendants are expected to honor their parents and observe God’s commandments. It also mentions a promise from God that those who follow him will have long lives in the promised land.

In Exodus 20:19-20, God gives another commandment: “Honor your father and mother…and keep my Sabbaths holy.” He then goes on to say that if they obey his commands they will be rewarded with many grandchildren like stars in heaven (Exodus 20:12). This passage also establishes a pattern for how tithing should work—that it should be given out of gratitude for having been given life itself by God.

The first time tithing is mentioned explicitly happens in Numbers 18:24-28

Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, ‘How have we robbed you?’ In your tithes and contributions. You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me, the whole nation of you. And if the way is too long for you, so that you are not able to carry the tithe, when the Lord your God blesses you, because the place is too far from you, which the Lord your God chooses, to set his name there, then you shall turn it into money and bind up the money in your hand and go to the place that the Lord your God chooses and spend the money for whatever you desire—oxen or sheep or wine or strong drink, whatever your appetite craves. He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever.
