The Top 20 Greatest Hymns

Hymn #1: “Amazing Grace”

Written by John Newton, this hymn is often called the most popular of all time. It was written during a time when Newton was struggling with his faith, and he wrote it as a way to give God thanks for his salvation. It’s been covered by everyone from Elvis Presley to Whitney Houston, and it’s been used in over 2,000 films, including “The Gospel According to Matthew.”

Hymn #2: “O Come, O Come Emmanuel”

This is one of the oldest Christmas carols still sung today. It’s believed to date back as far as the 10th century when it was sung in Latin during Advent services at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. The lyrics translate roughly into English as “Oh come, oh come Emmanuel/And ransom captive Israel/That mourns in lonely exile here/Until the Son of God appear.” The tune is also used for other songs including “St. Louis Blues” and “Joy to the World.”
