The Negev region covers approximately 12,000 square miles, making up around 60 percent of the land area of modern-day Israel. It is characterized by its harsh climatic conditions with extreme heat, minimal rainfall, and extensive stretches of rocky terrain. Despite these challenges, the Negev has been inhabited for thousands of years and
Negev (a desert in southern Israel) is mentioned several times in the Bible. Negev (or Negeb) is derived from the Hebrew root “dry land”. Some biblical passages use “Negev” to mean south because the Negev lay south of Judah. In the Septuagint (Greek version of the Hebrew Bible) Negev is translated as “desert.”
The Negev Desert is a barren and challenging environment. In the desert, God provided for the Israelites’ physical needs, such as water, manna, and quail, demonstrating His faithfulness and care for His people. It was also part of the land of Canaan, which God promised to Abraham and his descendants as an inheritance.
The Negev In The Bible
The Hebrew word Negeb means “south country.” The Negev is the area lying between the hills of Judah and Kadesh-Barnea. It roughly marks the southern border of Canaan (Numbers 34:3-5), so in traveling there Abram found himself at the southern border of the promised land.
The origin of the word, Negev, is from the Hebrew root, which denotes dry or wipe dry. In the Bible, Negev is also used for the direction, south. The term, Bedouin, is from the Arabic, badawiyyūn, in Hebrew, . The term is defined as a man who lives in a desert.
Negev Meaning In The Bible
The Negev is a dry, arid region in the southern part of ancient Palestine. The term is first used in the Book of Genesis (13:1), and is later used throughout the Hebrew Bible to refer to the southern region of the land of Israel. The Negev desert is mentioned several times in the Bible, and is derived from the Hebrew root “dry land”. Abraham lived in the Negev for a while after he left Egypt.
The Negev holds symbolic meaning in the Bible, representing a place of testing, preparation, and faith. Its barren and harsh environment served as the backdrop for important biblical narratives, symbolizing the challenges individuals and communities face in their spiritual journeys.
Later, the northern part of biblical Negev was inhabited by the Tribe of Judah and the southern part of biblical Negev by the Tribe of Simeon. The Negev was later part of the Kingdom of Solomon (in its entirety, all the way to the Red Sea), and then, with varied extension to the south, part of the Kingdom of Judah.

I ask, then, has God rejected his people? By no means! For I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin. God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. Do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he appeals to God against Israel? “Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have demolished your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life.” But what is God’s reply to him? “I have kept for myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace. …
