Prayer To Take Authority Healing Protection And Deliverance
Some Christians find the concept of deliverance difficult to wrap their heads around. However, we can take comfort in the fact that God’s Word defines the reality of Satan, of evil spirits, and of their attempts to disrupt our lives.
Both in the spiritual realm as he faced death on the cross and in the physical realm when satan tempted him in the wilderness, our Lord Jesus Christ had direct confrontations with the devil. Matthew 4:1-13; Mark 1:13; Luke 4:1-15). After Jesus had fasted for 40 days, the devil knew He would be physically weak and vulnerable to temptation. If Jesus had given in to temptation and sinned, He would not have been able to carry out the plan His Father had for Him: to die as a perfect sacrifice for our sins.
Jesus, of course, resisted the temptations of the evil one, and this account of His confrontation with satan serves to prove not only His perfect purity and sinless nature, but also the very real existence of satan. Furthermore, it details the arrival of the angels from heaven to minister to Jesus after His ordeal.
Many other passages in the Bible attest to the reality of Satan and his demonic minions as well. The temptation of Job is another well-known story, in which Satan appealed to God’s throne for permission to rob Job of his possessions (Job 1–2).
‘For this reason the Son of God appeared, that he might destroy the works of the devil,’ says the apostle John in 1 John 3:8. Evidenced throughout the Gospels, Jesus not only cast out demons as part of His work on earth, but He also taught about satan and his demons, as in “Then they brought to him a demoniac who was blind and mute; and he cured him; and the one who had been mute could speak and see.” The onlookers were all asking each other if Jesus could really be the promised Messiah, the Son of David. In response, the Pharisees said, “This man can only cast out demons by the power of Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons.” No city or house divided against itself can survive, he told them. How can Satan’s kingdom survive if he turns on himself and expels Satan? Who do your own exorcists call upon to banish evil spirits, if not Beelzebul? In contrast, “but if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come to you.” ( Matt. 12:22–28).
Before He returned to His Father in heaven, Jesus gave His followers the mission of continuing His work. He also endowed them with power over the devil and his minions:
Afterward, Jesus “called his twelve disciples together and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out and to cure every disease and every sickness.” Healing the sick, raising the dead, cleansing the lepers, and driving out demons should be part of your mission as you spread the good news that “the kingdom of heaven has come near.” (Matt. 10: 1 , 7–8).
Then Jesus gathered the twelve disciples, endowed them with authority to cast out demons and heal sickness, and sent them out to preach the gospel of the kingdom and to perform healings (Luke 9: 1–2).
They came back rejoicing, proclaiming, “Lord, in your name even the demons submit to us.” “I saw Satan plummet from heaven like a bolt of lightning,” he told them. That’s why Jesus said, “I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will hurt you.” (Luke 10: 17–20).
There is no doubt in God’s Word that the devil and his evil deeds exist, and that God ultimately has the final say and power over them. Thanks to the Holy Spirit, we also know we have the upper hand against them.
As Christians, we have a responsibility to pray for one another and for the world. It is not just physical health that we pray for, but also mental and spiritual well-being. Deliverance prayer is one of the most powerful forms of prayer for spiritual healing. Once we are sure that Satan exists, we can pray for others and exercise our authority over him in that area by faith and by the power of the Holy Spirit.
The Deliverance Prayer, found in Joy Lamb’s book The Sword of the Spirit, The Word of God, has been an invaluable resource for many of our prayer warriors. There are prayers in this book for just about anything you can think of. The prayers are based upon Scripture itself. On pages 38 and 43 and 44, somewhat revised, is the following Deliverance Prayer:
The prayer goes something like this: “In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and by the power of His blood and the Holy Spirit, I lift to the Lord myself, my family, my home, my neighborhood, my church, my place of employment, my city, my state, my nation, and the world, and each person and area for whom I am praying. For our safety, I invoke the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and the power of his shed blood. God’s Word says that whatever is bound on earth is bound in heaven, and vice versa (Matt. 16: 19).
In the name of Jesus Christ, I bind Satan and all the evil spirits, principalities, and powers that have been sent to harm the people and places I am praying for. I bind any and all spirit communion that could have an effect on the people and places I am praying for. In the name of Jesus Christ, I order all demons and evil spirits to bow before the throne of God. In the name of Jesus Christ, I release the Holy Spirit of God and the holy angels to destroy every satanic stronghold in these people’s lives and in these places, and to replace it with the life and love of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
If there are any curses, hexes, spells, demonic activity, or other evil things that have been sent against you or any of the people or areas for whom you are praying, I rebuke and break them in the name of Jesus Christ.
If I or anyone I am praying for has ever made a secret, negative vow to themselves, I renounce and seek forgiveness for that vow now. Please, Lord Jesus Christ, free us from the shackles of these impure vows within. In the name of Jesus Christ, I wield the Sword of the Spirit to sever the bonds of sin, weakness, character defects, and cellular and genetic disorders that have been passed down through my family and the families of those I pray for.
I have severed all ungodly ties and have placed the Cross of Christ in the middle of us. We have been released, and release is a wonderful thing (John 8:36). We can finally grow into the godly children the Lord always wanted us to be, bursting at the seams with the divine energy of the Holy Spirit and the resurrected Christ’s life and love.
In the name of Jesus Christ, I declare that the blood of Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God, was shed for the forgiveness of our sins and the protection of all that I have entrusted to You, Lord. Amen.”
