It is situated in a cave located on a small rocky outcrop that overlooks the city of Beiteddine. The grotto is reached by walking through a narrow passageway that leads down to an area where the spring water flows from under a marble rock and into a basin before continuing on its way and spilling into a beautiful waterfall nearby. The Milk Grotto has long been a site of devotion for both Christians and Muslims, and this site has been revered since perhaps as early as 400 AD when Maronites, and later other Christians, began using it. Originally the grotto was known to have formed around several springs that flowed directly from under a rock at its rear wall. Even prior to the time of Saint Maron, there had been independent Christian communities in Syria and Palestine. The first references to the grotto name appear in connection with Saint Maron (BS 564/567 — AD 410), about 400-410 AD, where it was referred to as Beth Deraye or “Cave of the Nuns”.

THE MILK GROTTO

Is considered sacred because the Holy Family took refuge there before their flight into Egypt to escape King Herod’s slaughter of the innocent firstborns.

It is said that while Mary was nursing Jesus, a drop of milk fell to the ground, turning the cave white.

The history of the devotion to the Mother of Jesus under the title of Our Lady of THE MILK may have roots in a 4th Century grotto in Bethlehem. To this day the Franciscan community maintains a shrine there called the Milk Grotto. Its centerpiece is the Blessed Virgin nursing the infant Jesus.

Many ask for the blessings of motherhood, beseeching the intercession of Our Lady that God will grant them a safe and happy delivery, and healthy, holy children. All who visit the Shrine find it to be a place of spiritual comfort and renewal.

For nine days, husbands and wives are asked to pray together the third of the joyful mysteries of the rosary, meditating on the birth of the Lord Jesus, then drink water or milk mixed with a speckle of the powder.
