Prayer for grieving family

My husband died last week. He was only 50 years old and we were married for 24 years. We had three children together, ages 10-15, who are now left without a father or mother. It is so difficult for them right now, especially the older ones who have more of an understanding of what has happened to us as a family. Please comfort my family and friends I leave behind and help them to heal. Give them the strength they need each day to face their sorrow. Give them courage, hope and faith each day of their lives without me. Surround them with people who care and love them, especially when I can’t be there for them. Help my family and friends remember that I am in a better place, that You have welcomed me home with open arms and a bright smile on Your face

Dear Lord,

We pray for the families who have lost a loved one. We ask that you comfort them with your presence and help them through this time of grief. We ask that they might find peace in knowing that they will see their loved one again in eternity. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen

Heavenly Father, we come to you as a bereaved family. You know our pain and grief. We remember the good times with our loved one and are reminded of their smile, laughter, and love for us.

We thank you for your comfort in this dark hour. We ask that you continue to hold us close to your heart as we go through these hard times together. Help us see the light at the end of this tunnel so that we can move forward into an uncertain future knowing that we are not alone.

Our hearts are heavy, and our eyes are filled with tears.

Our hearts are heavy, and our eyes are filled with tears.

We’re sorry for your loss. We know that no words can make it better, but we hope that this prayer will help to ease the pain of your loss and bring you some comfort in the days ahead.

“Our Father, who art in heaven…hallowed be thy name…”

We ask you to be with us during these difficult times.

Lord, we ask you to be with us during difficult times. We pray for your divine guidance and comfort for all of those who are grieving the loss of a loved one. May those who mourn find peace in the knowledge that their lost loved ones have passed on to a better place, where they can rest from their earthly troubles and enjoy heaven’s eternal sunshine. Amen.

We also pray for God’s guidance and protection over you as you grieve the loss of your loved one. We ask him to give you strength in this time of sadness and uncertainty, so that you may find peace in your hearts once again. Amen

Help us accept your will and find comfort in your infinite wisdom.

When we feel like God is distant, it’s because we are not seeing the full picture. We need to remember that God’s will is always for our good, and therefore His wisdom must be infinite.

God is so present in our lives—even when there appears to be nothing but pain and darkness around us. He has a plan for everything that happens in life, even if it takes time for us to understand what He’s trying to accomplish by allowing painful events into our lives.

Lord, be with all those who have lost their loved ones, especially (Name), whose loss weighs heavily on their hearts.

Lord, be with all those who have lost their loved ones, especially (Name), whose loss weighs heavily on their hearts.

May the memories of those who have died bring comfort and peace to those left behind. May Your hand be upon them as they struggle to make sense of this tragedy and help them find hope in the midst of grief.

Father God, help us see You in all things—even death—so that we may not fear it but embrace it as an opportunity for growth and transformation. We pray for an increase of faith so we can look forward to heaven where we will be reunited with our loved ones once again.

The grieving process is not a linear path. It can be long, painful and confusing. You may feel like you are alone and that no one understands your pain.

Your family and friends will have their own grief journey to walk as well, so please remember to give them the time they need to work through things before asking too much of them during this time.

Professional counselling can be helpful in supporting you through your journey with someone who has walked this path before and knows what it feels like firsthand!

A prayer for a family going through bereavement.

A prayer for a family going through bereavement.

Our heavenly father, we come to you as a bereaved family. We stand in awe of your grace and mercy in this difficult time. You have seen our tears, you have heard our cries, and you know the longings of our hearts. We are grateful for the comfort that comes from knowing that all things work together for good to those who love God and are called according to his purpose (Romans 8:28). In moments when we don’t understand why this happened, help us to trust that there is a purpose even though we can’t see it yet.

Help us to remember that life goes on after death; it’s only changed from what it was before death happened. Help us not be overcome by sadness or anger but rather fill us with hope even though things have changed forever. Comfort us with the knowledge that no matter how impossible it seems for now, one day we will meet again with those who’ve died—just like Jesus promised!

prayer for the bereaved family bible verse

Psalm 62 is one of the most beautiful passages in the Bible. It begins with a lament for the lack of strength and trust in God, and ends with exaltation for His love and guidance through difficult times. In between those two verses, we find this wonderful prayer for comfort and peace that all who have lost someone can take to heart:

5

Psalm 46:1-3 (NIV)

[1] God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. [2] Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, [3] though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.

My soul waits in silence for God only;

  • God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
  • God is our rock and salvation, a very present help in trouble.
  • The LORD blesses those who depend on him, those who look to him for protection, who respect the Lord’s name. He will give them the desires of their hearts and make all their plans succeed.
  • The LORD protects you from all harm: he guards your life; he keeps watch over you while you sleep!

From Him is my salvation.

I say to you, the LORD is my refuge and my fortress,

my God in whom I trust.

Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare

and from the deadly pestilence.

He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark. — Psalm 91:2-4

He only is my rock and my salvation,

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, and though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; Though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains quake at its swelling pride. Selah

My stronghold; I shall not be greatly shaken.

My stronghold; I shall not be greatly shaken.

Psalm 18:2

Psalm 62:1-2 NASB

God is our refuge and our strength. He is a very present help in trouble. Therefore we do not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; Though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult. Selah

We have passed through fire and flood; but you preserve us from Chaldeans’ sword. You surround us with songs of deliverance. Selah

God is our refuge and strength

We are living in a time when many people are struggling with grief and loss. Our world is full of sorrow, and it can be difficult to know what to pray for those who have lost loved ones.

The Bible provides us with some words that we can use as a guide when praying for the bereaved family. The most important thing we can do is recognize our own sinfulness before God, so that he may forgive us and give us strength to endure this difficult time. We must also remember God’s promises in Scripture: he will never leave or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5), but instead gives us hope through Jesus Christ (1 Peter 1:3).
