Popular Old Testament Funeral Scriptures

The funeral scriptures are a collection of passages that have through the years become often used by Christians to remember and celebrate their loved ones. They are used in a wide variety of ways but primarily they are read during funeral services or memorial services, or on other special occasions when friends and family are gathered to remember someone who has died.

Since the New Testament is the death of Jesus, it is clear that the Old Testament funeral readings are closely connected to the Christian faith. In this chapter, we will examine how these readings can be used in funeral services and other rites of Christian burial.

Popular Old Testament Funeral Scriptures

Planning a funeral is not something we look forward to, however, it is an important opportunity to bring closure to family and friends.

Within the Bible, there are many funeral Scriptures to choose from. They provide perspective that only God can provide and hope for your loved-one that they may live in eternity beyond their life on Earth.

The 25 funeral Scriptures that we’ve chosen offer hope to those in mourning. There are verses from the New and Old Testament and touch on a variety of themes, such as “God’s promises”, “not fearing death”, and a “time for everything”.

God has a way of providing peace to us even in the most difficult of times and these Bible verses share God’s hope for our loved-ones and for those who have lost their family and friends.

Lean On God After Loss
Attending the funeral of a loved-one is one of the most difficult things we will do in life. Our close friends and family play an important role in our development and they are people we see frequently.

To think about never seeing them again is painful to think about, and loss brings on emotions that we rarely experience.

In most families of faith, Biblical Scripture will be recited during a funeral. Funeral scripture can help bring perspective and peace of mind to friends and family and reassure that their loved one is at peace and safe in heaven.

It’s not uncommon to see family members revisit their faith after loss. The experience expands our perspective to think about what happens when we die. God’s wisdom is powerful and comforting (also read my example prayers for blessings).

His Word reminds us that our time on Earth is only a short time compared to the eternity we will spend in heaven.

Old Testament Scriptures For Funerals

  1. Psalm 23
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
  2. Psalm 121
I lift up my eyes to the mountains, where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip; he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you, the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm, he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.

As it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better.

I tell you this, brothers: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” …

Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are not you my workmanship in the Lord? If to others I am not an apostle, at least I am to you, for you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. This is my defense to those who would examine me. Do we not have the right to eat and drink? Do we not have the right to take along a believing wife, as do the other apostles and the brothers of the Lord and Cephas? …

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.” The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.

A good name is better than precious ointment, and the day of death than the day of birth. It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting, for this is the end of all mankind, and the living will lay it to heart. Sorrow is better than laughter, for by sadness of face the heart is made glad.

Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Cushite woman whom he had married, for he had married a Cushite woman. And they said, “Has the Lord indeed spoken only through Moses? Has he not spoken through us also?” And the Lord heard it. Now the man Moses was very meek, more than all people who were on the face of the earth. And suddenly the Lord said to Moses and to Aaron and Miriam, “Come out, you three, to the tent of meeting.” And the three of them came out. And the Lord came down in a pillar of cloud and stood at the entrance of the tent and called Aaron and Miriam, and they both came forward. …
