Novena Prayer For The Dead pdf

This novena to the dead pdf will make you ready to pray for the departed soul. A common belief is that once a soul departs from the body, its relationship is with God and not people. But knowing these 3 things will change everything.

Prayers for the dead are found in the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church in three places: during the nine days preceding an annual festival known as All Souls’ Day, from the First Sunday of Advent until the Saturday before Pentecost (inclusive), and from Septuagesima Sunday until Lent. These prayers are intended to help those who have died and continue to suffer in purgatory. In recent years, some parishes have instituted a ninth-day novena prayer for each parishioner’s intention, especially for people ill or dying.

What is a novena? A novena is a prayer of devotion and petition that is said 1-9 times to ask a favor or intercede on behalf of another. Where did the custom of praying nine days come from? For those who might need some religious context or comfort, this is an opportunity to pray for the person’s soul, who is enduring a waiting period in purgatory or has lost their life in martyrdom.

“Novena,” in this case, refers to a nine-day prayer. This prayer is for the souls of deceased relatives who have not yet been canonized by the Catholic Church. The prayer is said on each of the nine days from Ash Wednesday until Holy Saturday. The text below is an edited version of a traditional novena prayer.

A Prayer for the Dead

Lord Jesus Christ, Eternal Son of God, I adore You and offer You my prayers and sacrifices on behalf of all Your elect with Whom I desire to be united in Paradise. Despise not my prayers or any of my sufferings for love of You, but graciously accept them as willed by You and acceptable to Yourself through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.

The Novena Prayer for the Dead is a prayer that is said daily for nine consecutive days. It is often used as a way to pray for or remember a person who has died.

This prayer is also known by its Latin name, Decem novenas pro defunctis, which translates to “nine novenas for the dead.”

The Novena Prayer for the Dead has been around since at least 1884 and is still used today by Catholics around the world. It was created by Saint Gianna Beretta Molla, an Italian doctor and mother of five who lived from 1922-1962. On March 19th, 1962, she died while giving birth to her sixth child.

Saint Gianna Beretta Molla was canonized by Pope Francis on October 14th, 2018 in Rome during his Jubilee Year of Mercy celebration at St Peter’s Basilica. She was one of only two women who were canonized during this event; Mother Teresa of Calcutta was also canonized during this time period.

The Novena Prayer for the Dead consists of three parts: an introduction followed by nine petitions before ending with a conclusion paragraph which includes an optional prayer after each day’s petition –

PRAYER FOR THE DEAD (1-9)

The First Day

You descend into hell, O Christ, Savior, You who freed the souls from death by Your Cross. Through the prayers of Your Most Pure Mother, soften the pains of those in hell who cry out to You: Glory be to Thee O Lord!

O God, Whose property is always to have mercy and to spare, we humbly beseech Thee in behalf of the souls confined in Purgatory…

O God, Whose property is always to have mercy and to spare, we humbly beseech Thee in behalf of the souls confined in Purgatory, for whom our prayers are offered. Remember not, Lord, their sins and offenses but be mindful of Thy loving kindness and mercy. Spare them, O Lord most holy; O God most mighty; O holy and just One; Thou who art the eternal judge of the living and the dead! Look upon these souls suffering in the cleansing fire; vouchsafe unto them Thine aid. Deliver them from their torments; admit them into Thy Kingdom. Let there be accomplished in them that which they now desire through Christ our Lord. Amen

O almighty and merciful God, Who hast made all men that they might be saved and brought to a knowledge of Thy truth: deliver these poor souls from every evil by which they have been held back from knowing Thee or from loving Thee above all things. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen

DAY TWO

  • Most Sweet Jesus, through the bloody sweat which Thou didst suffer in the Garden of Gethsemane, have mercy on these Blessed Souls. Have mercy on them. Have mercy on them.

Our Father… Hail Mary… Glory Be to the Father…

  • Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in Thee!

Most Sweet Jesus, through the bloody sweat which Thou didst suffer in the Garden of Gethsemane, have mercy on these Blessed Souls. Have mercy on them. Have mercy on them.

The repetition of “Hail Mary” is the prayer’s most distinctive feature. Other common elements of a Novena include:

  • Invocation – this is where you ask the Holy Spirit, angels and saints to assist in making your prayer more powerful.
  • Petition – this is where you state what you want God to grant.
  • Thanksgiving – this is where you thank God in advance for granting your request.
  • Closing Prayer – this is where you release control and trust that He will hear and answer your prayers according to His will.

DAY THREE

Let us begin, In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

Dear God, who created all things for your glory and commanded that everything you have made should be for our benefit and enjoyment (1 Timothy 6:17; Wisdom 11:25), we thank you for sharing with us through Jesus Christ your power over life and death (1 Corinthians 15:26).

We pray now for the repose of [name], that through the intercession of Mary she may come to join your saints in heaven. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Holy Spirit, comforter of souls, please pray for [name], that she may know peace in this life, that she might see God’s loving face as her eternal dwelling place in heaven. Please pray that her soul may rest in peace. Amen.

Most Sweet Jesus, through the pains which Thou didst suffer during Thy most cruel scourging, have mercy on these Blessed Souls. Have mercy on them. Have mercy on them.
