Bible Verses About Women Not Preaching

KJV: “But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.” RSV: “I permit no woman to teach or to have authority over men; she is to keep silent.” GNB: “I do not allow them to teach or to have authority over men; they must keep quiet.”

When reading through the Bible, it can be frustrating to see authority figures give women specific roles and responsibilities while simultaneously forbidding them from speaking. For instance, see what God says in 1 Corinthians 14:34-35: “Let the women keep silent in the churches; for they are not permitted to speak; but they are to be submissive, as the law also says.” This passage has been used over time to justify the silence of women within Christian churches around the world. However, I believe that there are enough passages throughout Scripture supporting women pastors that this verse should no longer be used in this way.

The Bible makes it clear that women should not preach. Verse 11 tells us plainly that women are forbidden to speak in the church meeting. Don’t be fooled: a woman’s job is not to teach or preach but to follow her husband (1 Pet 3:2-6).

Women are not to preach in a church congregation. No matter how gifted, or how well informed a woman may be, she is forbidden to speak before men in a public meeting of worship. A solemn responsibility rests upon the ministers who conduct a service that men and women shall sit apart “as the Lord commanded.”
