What Does The Bible Say About A Gossiping Woman
The Hebrew term that was translated into English as “gossip” in the Old Testament actually has a definition that describes a person as “one who reveals secrets, one who goes about as a talebearer or scandal-monger.” A person who has access to confidential information about other individuals and then divulges that information to third parties who have no right to be aware of it is an example of a gossiper. There are two key differences between spreading information and engaging in gossip:
- The intention. People who gossip frequently have the intention of bolstering their own reputations by bringing others’ reputations into disrepute and elevating themselves to the status of some type of knowledge repository.
- The nature of the information that is sent People who gossip criticize the shortcomings of others or divulge potentially humiliating or shameful facts about the lives of others without the knowledge or consent of the individuals whose lives are being discussed. Paul lays bare the depravity and lawlessness of human nature in the book of Romans. He describes how God poured out his anger on those who disobeyed his commandments and statutes. They rebelled against the direction and teaching that God had provided for them, so God left them up to the inclinations of their sinful natures. Those who engage in gossip and slander are included on the list of sins (Romans 1:29b–32). This verse clarifies the seriousness of the sin of gossip and shows that those who are deserving of God’s wrath share it.
Widows are a category of people who were renowned for engaging in gossiping activities in the past and continue to do so today. Paul warns widows that they should avoid getting into the habit of gossiping and wasting their time. These ladies are referred to as “gossips and busybodies, saying things they ought not to” in 1 Timothy chapter 5 verses 12–13. Women have a tendency to spend a lot of time in each other’s homes and to work closely with other women. The book of Proverbs teaches us that “a perverse man stirs up dissension, and gossip separates close friends” (Proverbs 16:28). Misunderstandings that were spread through gossip have damaged many relationships, including friendships. Those who indulge in this activity accomplish nothing but create tension among friends, as well as rage, resentment, and misery in such relationships.
