The story unfolds when Belshazzar holds a lavish banquet for his nobles, using the holy vessels plundered from the Jewish temple in Jerusalem. In a display of great arrogance and disrespect towards God, Belshazzar and his guests drink from these sacred cups and bowls, praising their own idols and false gods.

The writing on the Babylonian wall was a prophecy, a predictor of what would happen in the future. This assures us of the providence of God. God is able to speak of the future because he is the one who holds the future. God has complete knowledge of what will happen because he has complete power over what will happen.
Daniel reads the words “MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN” and interprets them for the king: “MENE, God has numbered the days of your kingdom and brought it to an end; TEKEL, you have been weighed … and found wanting;” and “UPHARSIN”, your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.

The Writing On The Wall In The Bible
The Writing on the Wall is a story from the book of Daniel in the Old Testament of the Bible. It tells the story of King Belshazzar, who was throwing a great banquet for his nobles when a mysterious hand appeared and wrote four words on the wall. The king was terrified and called for his wise men to interpret the writing, but none of them could. Finally, Daniel was called in, and he interpreted the writing as a warning from God that the king’s reign was coming to an end.
The story of the Writing on the Wall is a powerful reminder of the sovereignty of God and the importance of repentance. It is a warning to us that we must turn away from sin and turn to God. The story also reminds us that God is always watching over us and that He will hold us accountable for our actions.
The Writing on the Wall is a story that has been retold throughout history. It has been the subject of countless paintings, sculptures, and other works of art. It has also been used as a metaphor for the consequences of our actions. The story of the Writing on the Wall is a reminder that we must always be mindful of our actions and the impact they have on others.
The Handwriting on The Wall Meaning
Daniel 5 has the word mene mene tekel upharsin as well as its translation. Upharsin is spelled parsin in certain versions. The words were written on a wall at Babylon’s acting monarch, Belshazzar’s palace. Although he was not Nebuchadnezzar’s direct successor, he is referred to as the “son of Nebuchadnezzar” (Daniel 5:18, 22). (Jeremiah 52:31). “The handwriting on the wall,” which refers to a portent or warning of impending calamity, originated from the biblical story of the strange and terrifying appearance of the words mene mene tekel upharsin.
Belshazzar, the wealthy and promiscuous king of Babylon, is described in Daniel 5 as hosting a feast for his court. The holy utensils from the Jewish temple that Nebuchadnezzar had taken in 586 BC were used in a sacrilegious way during the inebriated celebration. The enigmatic words “mene mene tekel upharsin” were noticed written on the wall by a man’s hand during the height of the celebrations (verse 25). The monarch was frightened. However, none could decipher the meaning of the words. Up until the prophet Daniel was summoned, Belshazzar’s wise men’s attempts at interpretation came up empty.
Daniel was among the Judahite captives whom Nebuchadnezzar took to Babylon. God gave Daniel the ability to read and interpret the words, which translated to “numbered, weighed, divided.” Daniel explained to the king the meaning of these words: Mene: God has counted down the days of your rule and ended it. Tekel: You’ve been measured and found to be lacking. Daniel 5:26–28 states, “Peres: Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.” The single form of upharsin is called peres. The language used in the Bible is never specified.
It was as the handwriting on the wall said. Indeed, it proved disastrous for Belshazzar, the disillusioned ruler. That that night, the Medes and Persians split apart the kingdom of Babylon, just as Daniel had predicted. After Belshazzar was killed, Darius the Mede became the king (Daniel 5:30–31).
Mene mene tekel upharsin’s presence on the king’s wall serves as a reminder that we shall reap the consequences of our actions (Galatians 6:7-8). God is the Judge; He justly considers all issues and exacts justice when it is appropriate (Psalm 94:2). God can occasionally make himself quite plain in our lives, accusing us of wrongdoing and forewarning us of impending judgment (John 16:8). Ignoring the “handwriting on the wall” will not get you anywhere.
