The Bible is filled with verses about washing. In fact, the Old Testament has more than one hundred references to washing, and the New Testament has more than fifty. The word “washing” appears in both testaments over a hundred times!
Washing was an important part of religious practice in biblical times. If a person wanted to worship God, they had to wash themselves. They had to have clean hands. If someone did not wash their hands before eating, they were considered unclean and could not eat or drink anything until they did so.
The Bible tells us that we should wash our hands before praying because God wants us to be clean when we come before Him (Mark 7:2-4). The Bible also tells us that we must be clean on the outside if we want God’s favor (1 Peter 3:1-2). But what does it mean to be clean on the inside? How can we truly be made holy by God’s grace?
The Bible has many verses about washing. The word wash appears some 10 times in the King James Version of the Bible, and there are many other verses that refer to washing in various ways.
In the Bible, there are many references to physical washing, such as when lepers were required to wash their clothes and bathe themselves with water before they could return to society after being healed (Leviticus 14:8).
There are also references to spiritual cleansing, such as when Jesus washed his disciples’ feet (John 13:4-10), or when he told his followers that they should wash one another’s feet as an act of humility (John 13:14-15).
Washing is also used as a metaphor for purification, such as when believers are instructed to “wash their robes” so that they can be prepared for the coming day of judgment (Revelation 22:14).
