A Prayer For Bereavement

A prayer for the bereaved, the heartbroken, and all who have lost loved ones. This prayer was written by a woman whose mother passed away when she was 12 years old.

Dear Lord, I know that I am not alone in feeling this pain. You know how much it hurts to lose someone you love. In your wisdom you gave us the ability to love with our whole being and to care for others so deeply that we can feel their pain as if it were our own. You also knew that someday we would be separated from those we love by death. My heart is broken because my mother is gone, but I know this pain will pass eventually – just like all other bad feelings do.

Please help me remember all the good times we had together and how much she meant to me during those times. Help me accept the fact that she is no longer here physically but is still very much alive in my mind and heart forever thanks to your grace! Amen

A Prayer For Bereavement

It is with a heavy heart that I write this, but I cannot help but feel that the time has come for a prayer for bereavement.

I am not sure why it took me so long to realize that people need to pray during times of grief and sorrow, but I have finally realized it.

The reason why I have never thought about this before is because I was always too busy to consider the needs of others. It seemed too overwhelming to think about what other people might be going through and how my prayers could help them.

But now that I have grown older, I am able to see things from a new perspective. And what I have realized is that people need our support! They need someone who will listen to their problems and offer solutions. They need someone who can help them find peace in their lives again after something terrible happens like losing someone they loved dearly or suffering some kind of tragedy like losing everything they own due to some devastating fire or flood which destroyed everything they owned (including all their clothes!).

So today, on this day when we remember those who have passed away from us (including those whose lives ended prematurely due to illness). This article also discusses short prayer for grieving family and prayer for grief and strength.

Short Prayer For Grieving Family

Loving lord, I know that there are many times that you grieve

  • As a friend, you can grieve with them.
  • They can come to you for comfort and support.
  • The pain of grief can be overwhelming at times. Ask God to give your friend the strength and hope they need during this difficult time.

when your children weep and there are very few words

What do you say to a child who is crying?

What do you say when your children weep and there are very few words? What can we say that will comfort, love, and be kind? How do we let them know that they are not just heard but understood in their grief?

The following is an excerpt from A Prayer for Bereavement by Dr. Jeff Keussler:

“You might consider using the following phrases: ‘I am sorry this happened.’ Or ‘I understand how difficult this is for you right now.’ Or even just sit with them quietly without saying anything at all until they feel ready to move on. If possible it may also be helpful if someone could go with them to pick out flowers or other items as a way of grieving together (or possibly alone) without trying too hard at first; allowing yourself time before attempting conversation may help avoid misunderstanding later on down the road when emotions might resurface unexpectedly.”

for their pain. There is so much hurt in this world

Dear Father,

The pain of this world is overwhelming. There is so much hurt in this world that it’s almost too much to bear. I pray for a friend who lost a loved one; I pray for their pain and suffering. They are hurting so deeply, but they don’t know how to talk about it or how to cope with their feelings. Please help them find peace in your arms and comfort in your presence. Be with them now, dear God! Amen!

and we don’t understand why You choose not to stop it.

We don’t understand why you choose to let bad things happen to good people, or why you allow suffering in the world. We don’t know what your plan is, and we feel frustrated by the lack of answers. But we do know that our faith in You is a source of strength for us during these trying times. And even if we don’t understand everything about Your plan for us, or why it includes this particular suffering at this point in time…

We’ll keep trusting You because You’ve shown us that there’s always hope; no matter what happens, there’s always hope!

But Lord Jesus, I come to you today with a heavy heart,

But Lord Jesus, I come to you today with a heavy heart.

I ask that you surround my friend with your love and grace. Hold her close as she battles against the sorrow in her heart. Please help me to keep on going despite the overwhelming pain I feel only because of who I am and what I have become: a broken woman who has lost someone she loves.

as my friend has just lost one of their loved ones.

Dear God,

As my friend has just lost one of their loved ones, I pray for them. I pray that you comfort them in this time of grief and loss. Let them know that you are with them and will not leave them in this time of sorrow. Help them to feel your presence in their hearts as they grieve the passing of their loved one. Let them feel your love as they mourn the death of a friend or family member who has been taken from us too soon by illness or accident.

Please help me be there for my friend during this difficult time; I want nothing more than to be able to help them through these days ahead when things seem hard and unbearable at times…but let me also know how much You love each one of us—including my friend—and how much You would want us all to stay strong together in order not only survive but thrive after such a tragic event occurs within our circle!

And dear Lord I ask you to give them strength and hope,

  • And dear Lord I ask you to give them strength and hope,

to help them deal with the present.

Give them hope for the future, Lord. Give them peace.

and surround them with Your love and Your grace.

  • When you feel the need to pray, start with the Lord’s prayer. This is a great way to get in touch with God and begin to hear His voice.
  • Pray for others who need healing and blessing in their lives, including yourself. Prayer is one of the best ways to show love and care for someone else—and it will help you get through your own difficult times as well!
  • Pray for those who are sick or ill, whether they’re family members or friends from church or from work. Ask God to bring them comfort during this difficult time in their life so that they can feel better soon!

Hold them close Lord, as they battle against the sorrow in their heart,

Dear Father,

We are here today to ask you to hold the family of [insert name] close. They have suffered a great loss and they need your comfort now. This person was loved by so many and their passing has left a hole in everyone’s heart. Please help them through this difficult time, Lord, as they battle against sorrow in their hearts.

and help them to keep on going despite the overwhelming pain that they feel. Amen

Comfort and strength to the family and friends. Comfort, peace, hope, healing, understanding, love and calm to their hearts. Assurance that they are loved by God. Encouragement that God will never leave them alone in this time of need. Courage to face today’s challenges with faith. Rest for their weary bodies and minds as they sleep tonight.

Short Prayer For Grieving Family

Regret is a natural response to loss. It can’t be avoided. Delaying or ignoring it will only make it stronger and more incapacitating in the long run. For this and other reasons, prayer is an invaluable support system for a broken spirit. In the early stages of grieving, it can be difficult to form coherent prayers, but as the initial shock wears off, you may find comfort in one or more of the following:

One, let all your sadness out.
Lord, have mercy on me, for I am in trouble; my heart is heavy and my body aches from sorrow (Psalm 31:9, NIV). I’m emotionally and mentally drained. To you I cry out, and I’m at a loss for words. I have nothing left to do but express how I feel and ask that you “keep track of all my sorrows… [collect] all my tears in your bottle… [and record] each one in your book” (Psalm 56:8, NLT). Amen.

Tip #2: Seek reassurance.
You, Jesus, said, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted” (Matthew 5:4, NIV). I need You to send me consolation; I am in mourning. Please enfold me in Your arms and hold me close. Help me, angels of mercy. Send people into my life who will bring me comfort, and keep me far from those whose words and deeds will bring me pain. Amen.

Try number three: seek healing.
God, please save me; Lord, please intervene quickly. The pain I’m feeling is all-consuming; please take it and shelter me in Your arms. Render me whole and mend my wounds (see Psalm 147:3). Amen.

Put out a peace offering.
Do not let your hearts be troubled, Jesus commanded. If you have faith in God, then have faith in Me. You have my peace now that I’ve left it with you. My gifts to you are not like those the world offers (John 14:1, 27, NIV). Help me find rest in You. My mind and heart need to be protected by “the peace of God, which transcends all understanding” (Philippians 4:7, NIV). A quiet night’s sleep is essential for me. I pray that calmness of mind and heart would be my constant companion. Amen.

5 Pleading for some optimism.
The Bible says that you, Lord, are “near to the brokenhearted and [You] rescue those whose spirits are crushed” (Psalm 34:18, NLT). Come near me and save me. Please don’t let me wallow in despair like those who haven’t discovered Your compassion and mercy (1 Thessalonians 4:13). Instead, revive me and restore my faith. Please encourage me to have faith that things will get better tomorrow, that the day after that will be easier, and that there will come a time when I will feel a renewed sense of excitement and anticipation about the work You are doing and the places You will lead me. Amen.

The Psalms, as suggested by the prayers above, can be especially helpful during times of loss. They can encourage you to give yourself time to mourn and pray as much as you need to.
