Why do demons always chase after human souls?

I have a theory, but bear in mind it is supported by Demonology, not anything the Bible says.(which isn’t much, as someone else pointed out). In a loose sense, it is supported by the Torah, but mostly this theory is tied into a blend of traditional and oriental demonology, so forgive me if it sounds…out there.

First I have to distinguish between a demon and a Devil. A Devil is what is colloquially referred to as a “Fallen One” or a fallen angel that has become a demon. That’s italicized because a fallen angel isn’t automatically a demon until they’ve had their wings removed or their holy light removed from them. (Via total corruption).

A demon is the resulting offspring of a Devil — originally by way of Cambions, which are half-human, but back-breeding with the Devils lead to “pure” demons. (Cambions are still considered the more dangerous, because they are effectively angelxhuman hybrids with an aggressive disposition and a knack for causing trouble).

Now, that’s important, because humans have souls. Correction: humans have completed souls. Their souls are not as pure as an angels, but it is considered whole or complete, at least beyond a certain age, which varies depending on who you ask.

Demons, on the other hand, have incomplete souls. A piece of them is missing, and the part that is missing is supposedly what determines the kinds of souls they feed on, and thus typically what sin they use to corrupt people. For example, a demon who’s soul lacks remorse entirely will feed on envious souls, and often use envy or pride to corrupt them until which time they are fit to eat. Now, why envy if remorse is what they lack? Because most envious people have deep wells of guilt in them somewhere, or feelings of poor worth — both of which are impossible if you don’t have remorse. You can’t feel bad about your actions or yourself if you don’t feel guilt. So the remorseless demon consumes the envious, guilty soul, and by doing so assimilates that part of their soul into himself, thus temporarily completing him. But like the energy you get from food eventually runs out, so does the energy taken from the soul, and sooner or later it’s effects wear off, and he has to go hunting for another soul to corrupt and consume.

Now, why does it have to be corrupted in order to be consumed? Because A) If the soul is corrupted with the sin that the demon uses, it then has a larger energy of that aspect in it. For example, an envious person might have 15% of their soul-energy dedicated to the envy, but a person corrupted with envy might have 50% or more of their soul dedicated to upholding that envy. So it makes it worth more to corrupt them.

B) Human souls lie somewhere between angels and demons in terms of cleanliness and purity. This means that their energies are not similar to the “wavelengths” of either, and thus don’t assimilate well into either. In order that the energy they need to complete their souls is more available to them, they corrupt the humans in such a way as to make their soul-energy more alike to a demons, though it is still distinctively human.

C) Demons live a long, long time. Corrupting humans gives them something interesting to do, particularly if that human resists. It becomes a kind of game to them, one who’s rules change every time a new player is added to the field.

Now, why don’t demons have complete souls? Well, because neither do Devils.

Fallen angels lose a piece of themselves when they defy the God that made them. It is the price they pay for acquiring free will once they fall. The God or simple fate may decide what part to remove, usually in accordance with the crime or sin they committed to be thrown out. Lucifer, for example, was thrown out because of his pride. Down on earth, (Or up, rather) he specializes in corrupting people with the sin of pride, and from it feeds on feelings of shame, which he has little of himself. Satan is similar; he was thrown from heaven for the sin of wrath, and now tempts people with anger and passionate emotions of the negative variety, and from them reaps fear and helplessness. (This is why he is considered the most dangerous of the Devils; he literally feeds on fear and is in every way addicted to power. The fact he tried to overthrow heaven the hard way proves that; Lucifer wanted to Coup de Etat God as well, but he made no move to do so until after he was cast out and Satan rounded up his help, using his demons to fight the War of Heaven, which Lucifer supposedly wanted no part of initially.)

The question remains, though: Why would a demon want or need a completed soul? What is their motivation? A Devil’s is pretty easy, since they were angels once; they long for the missing piece of them because they lost it. But demons, generally, are born with partial souls. Why, then, do they want it completed?

My theory suggests that they long for completed souls because there isn’t anything living that can go on without one forever. Having a half a soul means that certain things are not going to work properly, since the soul is the theoretical glue that ties body to mind, and mind to emotion. But another theory I have is that it helps them live cohesively as a society in Hell. After all, humans can only live cohesively because they all share the same basic traits of their souls; even missing the capacity for emotional empathy or remorse, as psychopaths do, a human’s soul is still able to complete itself using cognitive empathy, meaning that even the emotionally impaired, (as emotions are a key component of human souls) can have completed souls. What makes human society function, in terms of the cohesiveness of their souls, is the Superego, the aspect of the soul that sees the traits of another person’s soul unconsciously, and says, “you should have a soul like that, and do what they’re doing to attain that”. Of course, every person has a different soul, so true uniformity is impossible, but it’s what the Superego wants. However, souls, like personalities and psyches (Which are all tied together), that have something in common usually get along much better. The more you get along, the more smoothly society functions.

Demons, however, have partial souls. They are often missing the Superego part of their psyche, or else have it greatly diminished. There’s little that tells them to “Fit in” in order to make social functions easier, and naturally they aren’t inclined to. However, consuming human souls can piece together a crude element of the Superego, making them feel compelled to fit into a crowd. But why would any missing piece of the soul destroy the Superego? Why do you need a complete one in order to make it work? Well, because with no complete soul, there is no complete psyche. And since the Superego is the least vital to survival, it is usually the element of the psyche that gets diminished.

But why still do demons need a cohesive society? Well, that goes full circle back to Heaven, because believe it or not, it isn’t “The Devil” who makes the rules in Hell, but angels.

There are angels stationed in Hell for the purpose of keeping souls down there that are made to be there, as well as to keep demons, and more specifically Devils from escaping. There is also a few selected, AOH, or “Angelic Overseers of Hell” who’s job is to make sure everything is going as it should in Hell. Sure, it SEEMS like Lucifer and his lot make the laws, but they aren’t the only ones tasked with enforcing them, and thus must tweak the rules to appease those angels which preside there. SO really, Heaven is the one controlling Hell. And what easier way to control demons than to have them in a tyrannical, monarchical society ruled by seven kings, all of whom were once angels themselves? Hm…sounds fishy to me, but whatever. The Abrahamic God has already made it abundantly clear that he likes having total control of mankind, what’s to stop him from wanting total control of Hell?
